Mini 0805 radio disruption & GPS problem

Hi Druggist,

Yes, that's exactly it. I've found those converters to be terrible and it doesn't seem to matter if you pay £2 or £10; they're identical....as in hopeless! I also found with mine it didn't provide a stable voltage either, so the cam was randomly switching off and on whilst driving, so pretty pointless having it.
So, I got this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B003I61DSG socket and this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B00KPV9ZSW plug from Amazon UK - I presume they'll have similar available in Oz mate and they work perfectly, with no interference on the radio and a nice stable 5.1v output. Oh and you have a spare USB output as well, which I use for the phone.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B00KPV9ZSW is this cable output 12V?That is hardwire kit?Change 5V to 12V automa

For those who are having issues with radio hiss with a 0806 i have found a solution. I own an X-Trail and this cam played holy hell with the radio, both AM and FM. I checked the voltage regs used with the cam and they are very por design. However if your handy with a soldering iron, there is a great fix. I am using one of these i found on eBay. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201110332295
Just set the voltage at 5.1v and your good to go without any radio issues.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi Darkman. What were you using to connect the cam to the car - the 12v cigar lighter or via the fuse box with another step-down unit? Also, how have you connected the Step-down module (that is SOOOO cheap BTW!) to the car and then to the cam?

At the moment i have a cigar lighter plug providing the 12v to the module, then i used the lead from the original step-down module and connected it to the new module.
It could just as easily be hard wired to the fuse box.
Regards

Ok, but what WERE you using, before you installed the new module?

I was using the cigar plug lead that came with the cam.
The optional hard wire kit they offer with the cam is useless as it also generates a lot of emi.

Yeah, I agree. I used a cheapo Chinese 12/5v converter with a USB output that was completely hopeless - the radio hissed and popped like something from the un-supressed 1970's! So I dumped that, got a 12v socket and hard-wired that into the fuse box via a piggy-back lead and shoved a good quality, twin-output USB adapter into that and the USB lead from the adapter to the 0805. I now get a totally stable 5.1v to the cam - engine on or off - and a noise-free radio!

Found this topic and researched for a good solution. Besides the above awesome solution(s) , found lots of these...
USB-from-12V.jpg
Some with a bracket and some without.
Generally they are called... 12V to 5V Waterproof Motorcycle Mobile Phone USB Charger Power Adapter. Found them in all ranges , 1 or 1.5 or 2.1 AMP , even one that had duel USB slots of 1 and 2.1 AMP.
Yes you would have to use the 'fuse tap' method to tap into fuse panel , or your own fuse to another power source. I plan to 'fuse tap' into the heated seats fuse, which only power when 'key on'.

Yep, that's looks good and hope it'll provide a noise-free stable supply.

I also have a mini 0806, only plugged into the cigarette lighter but causes the car radio to constantly search, frustrating,
No problem with the radio when the camera is disconnected
