Nextbase IQ

Just noticed.

Antennas on it, hope they can click off and be replaces by a external antenne, CUZ thats about all i can think of for use of my radio antenne that have not been mounted for 3 years.
That aught to extend range quite a bit.

EDIT: 699 USD,,,,, i would not be able to sleep with that much dangling on my windscreen, even if it gave me a very good clue to who stole it or what ever.
#2 EDIT : also that light on the camera, i hope that can be turned off, but i think judging from footage it also can, i dont even want such things to come on in a event, i want total stealth.

Alrighty, video is now live going over the different features of the iQ.
Questions for next session:

"We need you to have a reliable signal" ... where I park at home, there is zero mobile signal... mobile phone works fine, but only because it switches to "Wi-Fi Calling"... need the camera to do the same...

AI: "or is this a piece of trash that is floating by while parked?" ... Yes, so don't record!

Well, roll on next episode. Does it really emit that blue line during dark hours? A ‘come on’ to any thief. $1000 to purchase (extra for rear camera), the 4k version followed by $20 monthly (potentionally), I think this certainly in the UK will be a huge turn off.
Looking at the camera in the hand it was large and bulky to tuck behind a rear view mirror.
No mention of a detachable camera or will that be covered by technical?

If you check out their install video, they detach the antennas so you can point them up or down, depending on what fits best in your vehicle.

They mentioned that the light is there to warn intruders. IIRC it turns red when it senses something like a break-in and can sound an audio alarm too.

If you're looking for a hidden and stealthy option, I don't think this is it, lol.

Switching to WiFi when you park home is a great question to ask. Thanks for that.

Personally I'm interested in the primary use cases and design, not trying to catch them and go "gotcha" and make them look bad on camera if they haven't accounted for any extremely unlikely scenario.

Probably only when the radar detects the thief, then lights up to get his attention!

The question is: Does it still record the trash, or having buffered it, does it then throw it away? I can understand it not uploading it as an event, but I would like to know that it is still recorded safely on the card, just in case the AI gets it wrong!

This is of course where trialling would have helped, Mon thru Fri, 9-5, does cover all eventualities, lab testing nothing like real life.

I guess it depends on how much it is going to save you in reduced insurance?

For me, that is two years of insurance payments, so it is never going to pay for itself, but some people pay far more than that for insurance and potentially it could save them something, especially if they are already having a problem with vandalism or theft.

Insurance companies here, and police have noticed dashcams.
But i am not aware any give and deduction for having a dashcam, and police if something happened, they do now ask for witnesses and dashcam footage.

I pay a little over 500 USD/ year for my car insurance.

Well the foot of it would fit on my dotted area, as long as it dont slide up / down onto the mount if there is any such.

Beside the price, my #2 let down as of now is the interior camera, i dont need one, and my mirror would be in the way.

Nextbase do offer reduced insurance costs. Albeit through an outside broker, (a Scottish based company), I enquired earlier this year and was offered a 15% discount but sadly their rates where far higher than I was already paying and they simply could not match the prices. I’m paying £225 full comp on an XC60. That said, not once was I asked if I had a dashcam fitted, or how or what make.

It's not going to save me anything in insurance. Last year my car got rear-ended, and was sent off to the repairers.

A couple of nights later, my car was stolen from the rear warehouse of the repairers. LoL

Good video mate and some hard hitting questions there. Does make the whole product feel a little bit more at ease for me, and the technology will be interesting.

Even if the subscription cost includes the LTE data subscription itself, it all comes down to the price and whether the IQ and extra smarts really are worth the premium.

I think with other manufacturers and AI being the buzz word of the decade, more of them are going to implementing "AI" smarts to differentiate their products and I think at a much cheaper price range.

It's definitely an interesting business decision, I can understand perhaps profit margins on hardware traditionally may not be much, but this is whole another level lol

There is more info available now as it's on sale, but no sample footage that I've found yet

Nowhere can I find any mention of a CPL, not mentioned in the manual, looking forward to some footage to see any vibration and facing the sun

At the price and optional subscription that is one mega expensive, still hanging off a stalk, dashcam

2k unit £400
128Gb card £65 (there is a 64Gb card included but in my experience that is too small for long drives)
Optional subscription, lowest, £70 a year. Without the subscription most of the paid for hardware/software is turned off

5 years - £815
My Viofo cost me £130 including CPL, 128Gb card and HWK, for the same 5 years (although I had the card and HWK in stock from a previous dashcam but included the price as comparison)

Not for me

Once you put the costs over a five year period like that, that really drives home the points.

Also can't rely on promises of future features to be added, have to go with what is present today in the here and now. Is it worth five times the price for AI smarts?

For me, also no. If you want to be that protected against theft or people assaulting you in your car, you may as well not go outside the house. Unless you're a rich celebrity (who would probably pay for personal security), or you've got a super expensive car, then what's the point.

Makes you wonder just who the market is aiming at? Certainly not the average hard working man. Footballers and super stars looking at those prices.

And most incidents are similar, your insurance pays out and you have still had the incident, dashcam or not, so you still pay increased insurance costs next year. Dashcams can save a lot of inconvenience, arguing about who's fault it was, but you have still had the incident and the AI had no effect on the result.

Theft from or of the car is a bit different, because you can maybe get the police to deal with the thieves if you have their faces on camera, and thus prevent it happening again, so for people who have a theft problem, it may be worthwhile. But you still end up claiming on your insurance, or paying yourself.

None of this AI seems to help with getting dangerous drivers removed from the roads, or with helping you drive more safely, and when you show the police the recording showing all the other driver's speeds, they are not going to trust the measurements, they will get it forensically analysed anyway.

One negative is that you will no longer have any excuse for editing the video, or choosing which section you show the police, they will view the original as stored by Nextbase, including interior footage, and rear if available, and presumably they have the right to view any other footage Nextbase have stored, with or without your permission if someone has been injured/killed, even if it was recorded by an iQ camera in another vehicle!

Doesn’t look to be any threads to attach a CPL either.

From the current replies no one seems interested in both the design and price

I'd like to see the faces of Halfords customers when they see the price as Halfords, when I was last in there, only had NB on display
