Gearbest Dome G90 Dashcam with Ambarella A7LA30 Review

Here are product pictures. Both G90 and G1WH are from Gearbest.com

I have the car charger and mount in car so they are missing here.

Specifications on the box.
Now I get why the battery doesn't last too long.
It's useless to use as a still camera outside the car as it only lasts few minutes on full charge.
If it has less than half battery, it just shuts off as soon as it turns on..
It only has 180mAh battery compared to 500mAh on G1WH that lasts longer than 5 minutes.

Size comparison of G90 vs G1WH:

Check battery levels.
Both have almost full battery.
dsc01452-small-jpg.6472

Just after few seconds, G90 battery is almost gone while G1WH battery is still at the same level as before.
Not sure if it is the case with all G90.
dsc01453-small-jpg.6473

Lens module is much deep/tall on G90 than G1WH.
I wonder what's in that much space. Hmm...
But the camera body of G90 is thinner/slimmer than G1WH so that makes the G90 lens look like it's protruding out too far.

Top view of G90 and G1WH.
G90 lens has much wider view.
As you can see, lens on G90 is actually coming out of the module while lens on G1WH is completely inside the module.
Need to be careful not to scratch G90 lens as it comes out little bit.

Here is a video of G90 with latest r328 firmware from Doreen.
It's on the same road that I drove before so you can get an idea but I think it's pretty much the same.

BTW, file size is same before the upgrade and VBR has not changed either.

Audio quality is little better but still choppy specially on bass heavy sounds.
If you listen audio in the clip, female voices are much more clear than bass heavy male voices.
The mic distorts more on bass.

Also, a bad driver at 1:35 in the clip.
He almost came over to my lane until I honked.
I passed him and saw him in the rear view mirror doing the same thing over and over, driving in two lanes.
He even stopped traffic from making right turn at a traffic light as he was blocking both lanes.
May be on Ganja.

New r328 firmware:

Here is the video of same road with initial firmware (svn r) for reference:

Finally got around driving at night.

These screenshots and videos are with HDR off.

Night Screenshots:
G90:

G1WH, much darker in comparison:

G90:

G1WH, much darker in comparison:

G90 video at night:

Here is same video with G1WH for comparison:

G90 video at night 2:

Here is same video with G1WH for comparison:

G90 looks like it has higher resolution and videos look brighter and cleaner than G1WH.
G90 has more details in darker areas compared to G1WH.

With HDR on, it may be even better.
That's for next time when I drive at night.

@Doreen ,
Two questions,
1. Is there a replacement mic available for us who already have the camera?
2. Can I replace the battery with something more powerful?
I have C600 camera that has 300mah battery like this one... is it okay to swap it?
The battery doesn't last too long to even go through menu.

I opened my g90 because i wanted to know is it possible to put extension cable to cmos unit but i lost my nerve and i only opened that back cover.
But what we can see here is that microphone is right there and if you have skills and tools you can replace it, although it's unclear is it the microphone that is faulty or is this some other problem.
Also now i noticed that i can't see battery here, then it must be on the other side of that PCB board and then it must be very small because there is not much room left.
It's still unclear to me is CMOS attached to PCB board or is it separate like it's in gt680 for example.

I'm pretty good with soldering so mic replacement is no problem.
I can even try swapping C600 mic but the C600 mic is very low volume so that won't do any good.

Too bad if the battery is on the other side as it'll be hard to fit anything bigger. :(

EDIT: BTW, what that under the black tape? Could it be the battery?

Here is a video on a rainy day.
A driver at 1:25 has his window open. WTH?
G90: HDR ON --> HDR only affected some lights slightly depending upon angle.
Most headlights didn't even have any halo effect at all.

Original firmware videos posted by reverend had a lot of halo around lights.
This is much better.

G1WH for comparison:

It's the firmware that makes all the difference mate - the original camera I had was on a very early firmware (it was one of the original samples :) )

Looking forward to seeing your night footage later!

I just had to open it all the way and some interesting things revealed.
As you can see camera module is separate, so if you want to do mod like here
then it's quite possible if you can find suitable extension cable.
Second, battery is in the middle and there is room to put bigger battery if needed.

Nice!
So the battery was not under the black tape but on the other side of the board. hmmm...
Did you have to take the orange ribbon out?

Also, I see it doesn't have mah value on the battery.
C600 has I think 240 or 300mah battery so should be better than what G90 has currently.
Need to check if the C600 battery fits in there.

Why do you want the bigger battery mate?

You're better off with caps as batteries are a time bomb waiting to go off in these things!

Battery is behind pcb board but quite safe after all to open.
I just ordered extension cables from joovuu.com, i would like to make this rear camera someday and it would be easier to install if camera is out of the box.
I'm not quite sure does it fit but i can risk it, same amount of pins anyway so it should be ok.
Looks to me that markings on the battery is just a date, so not much info there.

The battery on G90 doesn't even last enough to go and change menu options unless it's fully charged.
If it has less than full charge, it never even starts. It just starts and shuts down with 'Goodbye' message.
I have to plug it in to change menu and that may be fine for now but I'm just thinking about bigger battery.
I may just leave it alone though for now as it's working fine as long as it's powered.

Capacitors will be hard to put in there as it's on the inside of the board unless I get something that's flat instead of round.

The picture has 26 wires on it so make sure it has the same.

tks, jokiin.
can you open it and downlaod?

you can but it tries to open another page with an exploited audio player, my browser blocked it but I don't think people will be too happy if they get spyware from trying to download your sample, any file sharing site that has advertising on it is best avoided, they're never good

I'll get a chance to drive at night tomorrow and will remember to turn the HDR on.

For now, before I forget, using HDR during daytime is not good.
Videos overall are still good but they become grainy, specially when looking at license plates and other printed signs.

So daytime, no HDR.

Also, I went to the car after parking for around 6 hours outside and noticed the car mount fell off.
Camera with the mount was hanging off of the usb cable.
May be heat? Hmm...
It stuck back on to the windshield fine though.
