Can you use a power supply inside your home? You don't say much about your "power sources" in your vehicle. Are you sure they're live? Have you used a volt meter to test the connections and verify they're connected right?
Where is the unit located? Is it mounted in your car? If it is have you tried a higher elevation? Park on some hill and wait awhile to see if it locks on.

I use my lighter socket for two cameras, a GPS and a 7" monitor with never a volt/current problem. A lot less a problem than some butt smoker using the ash tray all the time.
First you have to make sure your lens is clean and then move on to the windshield. Then you have to drive around making sure you do so to end up with a sample of video clips that from every lighting angle. North, east, south and west. Then carefully review everything.
