I was thinking to add these to my Grill to enhance the night vision capabilities of the Dashcams.
I would replace the white LEDs with 940nm Infrared LEDs.

What are everyone's thoughts of the idea?

I already ordered a GS5000 before I found this forum.

Hi Malodave,

I don't know much about those lights but I doubt they are bright enough to make a difference in dash cam recording. Perhaps others have some experience on these lights.

Hi Malodave, have you followed up on this? I am interested to use it for enhancing night recording with my mobile phone as a dashcam.

It does register IR so I hope to find some info / idea's to get better night recording.

Please let us know.

PS:

I found this to replace my standard bulbs:

I got 2 sets of the lights in. I actually found them for under $10/set. I am looking at some 1W IR LEDs now.
The lights use 8 in each of the four units I have. The standard LEDs are Piranha UFO cool whites Very little
light output. Hell, I got some 10MM 1W White LEDs that output 360,000 mcds each. For Supplimental
lighting or DRLs they would be great. I used 30 of them them in a studio strobe modeling light. The total
output is 10.8 Million mcds, or 4100 Lumens. That calculates to about a 250W incandescent flood light.

The IR LEDs will need a new PCB and a heat sink. I have drawn up a new rear housing in CAD made of aluminum
with fins that has about 4.75 Sq inches of surface area per LED to dissipate the heat. The 8 LEDs will be wired in
series with a 1 Ohm, 1 Watt, Resistor to the 12V power supply. The LEDs have a 1.9 volt forward voltage but this
will run them at 1.5 V at a 700mA current. I will have 2 light strings in each side of my truck's grill.

The LEDs mount through the bottom of the PCB and get soldered to the PCB. There are two 2-56 Screws to hold
each LED to the Heat sink. I will add a small dab of thermal joint compound to the LED's Bottom. The Reflector
and lens housings are being reused from the original lights

Here is a quick peek at my drawing:

PS

I don't think the H7 HIR Bulbs are Infrared bulbs

Nice, but I have had a closer look at my phone camera, and it shows a slight red -ish color over the lens. I suspect that is an infra red filter/blocker. I would have to check with an infrared torch to be sure. It does show the IR remote control light up but as far as reflected IR I don't know yet...

Hi Malodave,

This is looking good. Very interested in the finished product and how much night quality improves.
