550 Interference with DAB radio?!!

Hi
You guys have put me off the Blackvue and I am now wondering if two unlinked camera's are better than a 2 channel. The cost in UK for good quality kit is also a problem but reading this forum purchasing overseas at realistic prices is also fraught with danger. Maybe I will wait until a decent solution appears. The Blackvue DR650 was the only solution that was discreet enough for me to live with but I like my DAB too much to risk it.

Its the power supply, not the coaxial between the two cameras that is the problem. You can check this by disconnecting the rear camera. You will still get the same interference with only one (1) camera.

The issue I found was prominent when I was using the 12v plug directly in the cars 12v socket. When I changed to the Power Magic Pro it improved the interference, only marginally. It still was never as good a signal when the camera was off, but at least I could get a good signal 90% of the time.

I had also added two Marcom SFC-4 split Ferrite (5mm - 100Mhz) cores to the coaxial and power cable, however the reason they still interfere is they only have a range of up to 100Mhz according to the datasheet. UK DAB operates within 174Mhz to 230Mhz. Though I may buy some (http://uk.farnell.com/multicomp/lf5...=ferrite+core&aa=true&categoryId=700000005486) that cover the range 10Mhz to 300Mhz to replace the Marcom units.

Hi Alan,

I just purchased a 650 and tried just the front camera and the 12v pug and DAB drops out a lot. Do you think the 10 - 300mhz will help at the power connection to the camera or it coming direct out of the camera?
I am guessing the case of the cam is grounded through the cable. Anyone tried to ground the camera casw seperatly and see if that helps?

The Power Magic Pro is grounded to the car and that is why I felt it gave a better reception for the DAB than using the 12v jack

In theory so is the power socket etc but not always the best. From doing a lot of vehicle EMC, I find a lot of metal devices use the power ground as the case ground and sometimes it can create one big ground loop, one bir arieal. If I get chance, I will try to ground the camera case with a seperate ground wire, see if it helps.

Any update on the DAB/650 interference yet. I have read that it is not suitable for cars with DAB but that is from a Mini specialist. I don't have a Mini and wonder if its a problem with all cars or just the MINI. I want to take power from the fuse box not the cig lighter plug and could screen the cable (run them down the middle of a stripped bit of coax), but if its an earth/ Blackvue problem I do not want to risk it. Its not just the DAB I drive a Hybrid and there is a lot of technology that could suffer from RFI.

I have the DR650GW in my 63 plate Toyota Auris Hybrid. I hardwired it into the Auto-Dimming mirror, and my DAB works just fine.

Thanks Alan I want mine for a Auris Hybrid TS Excel so that was really helpful. Can you give me details of how you ran the cables please. Did you source it from UK?
I have found a place that I selling them on line for £229 which is about the same price as I would pay in Canada. Whats your experience of the 650? Blackvue UK (TTW) keep recommending the Lucas or Mi- Witness and say the 650 has reliability issues yet most independant user reports rate it highly.
Thanks again most helpful

We have the same car.....

I simply ran the cables up the side of the rear view mirror stalk and into the headliner. Two wires run to the Auto Dim mirror which are easy to tap into.

I bought mine here...http://blackvue.co.uk/index.php/onl...rch-offer-with-free-64gb-micro-sd-card-detail

I have both a 600 and a 650, and the 650 is the most reliable. (I am running alexsoll custom firmware). I have had ZERO reliability issues with my 650...less said for the 600.

Hope that helps

That's very unusual for a BlackVue seller to recommend something else although TTW do seem to sell most high end cameras - maybe they've had too many returns of that one or something?!

Hi
I am after a 2 channel, I thought the DR650GW was only 2 channel. Is yours a a two channel set up? I am wondering if the DAB problem is caused by the rear camera? It should not of course make any difference with proper screening but the DAB aerial is in the rear roof. The official UK distributor is over £100 more for the two channel than the price in Canada. I will be in Canada next month and intended to pick one up there, but all the negative RFI reports are causing me to have second thoughts.
Its not just the dab that causes concern there is a lot of technology in the Auris Hybrid that could be affected by RFI.

Yes, my 650 is a 2 channel, but I do only use the front camera.

I thought the DAB interference was caused by the power cable (which it isn't in my case)

I wouldn't concern myself about the hybrid rfi worries. I'm an amateur radio enthusiast and I have a lot more kit than the camera generating RF and my hybrid operates fine :)

TTW come up as Blackvue UK on the web but do not act as a manufacturer rep. In a global market prices should be roughly the same, returns need to be the manufacturers responsibility if its a fault in the product. Pitasoft Korea are also evasive. The problem with UK distributors is they want to inflate the price and if the customer has a problem blame it on DIY installations. I have over 50 years experience in electronics, civilian and military, telecoms and computers. I've worked transmitters that could explode light bulbs and cause cars to cut out half a mile away. RFI potentially could have implications way beyond knocking out DAB. The days of 90 day warranty and manufacturers blaming the disti who sells a bare product so he can abdicate from responsibility by blaming the installation should be long gone. Reading the tales of on this forum I am not so sure these devices meet FCC or any other standards for installation in motor vehicles. I don't mind paying for good support, but is nobody can tell me the cause and solution to a well documented problem I question their competence and ability. This is not a cheap camera.
Dashcam Talk is great because you get the experience of real independent users..

I have the same issue. My rear camera is just below my shark fin antenna on my Hyundai. There is significant degradation of radio signal, even on Sirius. How far from the sharkfin antenna should the rear camera be located to reduce interference with radio reception to acceptable levels?
