Hello,

I have tried reading all of the posts about power packs for car dash cams and, quite truthfully, at 74 I cannot take it all in. I am hoping someone will help me by suggesting the model of power pack I need. I go to a lot of dances, attended by wrinklies like myself, and the car park is bristling with cars that have been scratched, without anyone owning up to the deed.

I have two dash cams but need a power pack or two to give me full recording for at least four hours, or more, while I am dancing and wondering if some oldie has decided to use my car as a battering ram.

Any help is appreciated.

Eddie

Are you willing to plug the cameras into the power pack manually when you park up? If so, just about any one with the right capacity will do.
Depending what cameras you have, you'll need at least 2 x 500mA x 4 hours, or 4000mAh. But you should go a fair bit larger because capacity will reduce over time.
The Anker Powercore 13000 seems pretty good https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B00Z9UY65G
Maybe someone can recommend a different one that can be charged while it is powering other devices. That way you wouldn't have to move plugs manually.

You might also want to look at https://dashcamtalk.com/battery-discharge-prevention/ for devices that run your cameras off the car battery even when ignition is off, but stops them from draining the battery. I just bought and fitted a Vico Power Plus, and aside from the minor hassle of installing it, it seems to be a perfect solution. Only one day's use so far, but it kept recording continuously like it's supposed to.

I'm also 74, but a bit tech savvy.

I went with the Vico Power-Plus for my Cam, and I'm very happy with the protection it provides regarding battery drainage.

You can find someone that will help you install the Power-Plus, if you feel it's too challenging.

Before giving you some advice, need to know few things:
Those two dashcams you have are they using 5V or 12V power ?
What is make / model of dashcams, any link ?

For Niko

The camera I had hard wired by Halfords and use on my front windscreen is the Nextbase 312 GW. Link is

The other two (one for each side window when I am not with the car) are these:

No idea what make they are but cheap enough to throw away if I wish to change.

With regard to the battery charger - I would charge/recharge it in my house - so no need to use the car electrics.

Hello Rajagra

Thank you for the advice. Vico Power Plus looks to be the business. Will wait for other responses before deciding. With regard to your comment about use of the power pack - I expect to charge it overnight in my house (not ever using the cigarette lighter charger in the car). I want to plug it into the camera, turn on the record button of the camera. and leave it recording until I decide to unplug or switch it off when I return to the car. Do not need overnight recording.
Once again, thank you.

They are both 5V dashcam.
  • You need 2 x USB to MicroUSB cables ( good quality, shielded ), the length depends on where you hide your battery bank to run from there to front and rear camera, but in most cases if you hide battery pack in glovebox then it takes around 3 metre to front camera and 5-6 metre to rear camera.
  • Good battery bank with 2 USB ports ( min 1Amp each )
Anker battery pack which @Rajagra mentioned has good reputation and you should be fine with it.

BLACKVUE POWER MAGIC BATTERY PACK (B-112) or a CELLINK B v2 , sounds like you are talking about a battery pack as opposed to a battery drainage protection device. I think the cellink can be charged in the house. Not cheap but Im saving up my pension money to get one of them. You can also plug them into the 12 cigarette socket to charge whilst driving around.
