SJ4000 Manual (PDF included)

Hi, i bought this camera last weeks and first used it yesterday! Fantastic bit of kit! This manual has been extremely useful and would like to thank the writer for all his effort in compiling it! However i have experienced an issue with the camera and wondered if anyone could help!

I purchased the camera as a headcam whilst horse riding and when returning from our ride yesterday i removed my hat and stopped the recording as per manual instructions. Today i have reviewd footage as i have a couple of incidents i want to put on youtube/facebook and for dome reason the recording has stopped about 10 mins previous to when i actually stopped it?! Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
I'm glad you found the manual helpful.

There are a few simple things you could check. Be sure the motion detection is off. Be sure the battery is adequately charged.

Formatting the memory card is described in the manual in the section about deleting files. It's on Page 12, item 5.10.3. I don't know why I didn't call out more clearly that this is also the method to format the memory card, not just delete files.

I thank Pavle for his preparation of the online guide at his website. He has certainly given me more credit than I'm due! Pavle was instrumental in helping me transform a messy, personal manual that perhaps I alone understood into a manual that could be published on his excellent website. He even wrote an entire section of the manual. I also have the members of Dash Cam Talk to thank. I've been asking quite a few questions and received lots of helpful replies. I also must thank AngryItalianMan, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-YGEwh0i_8rCXOIf7IHFTQ, publisher of a YouTube channel of the same name, for his patient replies to my relentless questions. As a newbie the response from everybody has been greatly appreciated. Thanks again to Pavle et al.

Thank you, TTT, for putting together a manual that makes sense to a new user. We bought an SJ4000 last week to use as a dash cam and the quality is impressive. BUT there are two things we can't figure out and would be grateful for any assistance:-

1. Is it possible to have the display running all the time the car is moving? So far, the display goes black after a few seconds and we can't find anything in the menus to turn it on again.

2. The recordings we've made on the SD card are broken into sections and there are short breaks between the sections. Obviously, it would be disastrous if an accident occurred during one of these breaks! How can we ensure continuous recording?

Thanks and best wishes!

Welcome to DCT, Minnie!

Now to your questions:
1. Yes. On page 4, in the "Screensavers" sub-menu, select "OFF" and the screen will be always on. I know, I know, it doesn't make much sense but we can't change the menus' English translation. :)
2. Do you have the camera set to Car Mode and Cyclic Record set to one of the available time intervals? If so, how long are those breaks between clips?

Thanks!! Have turned 'Screensaver' off, so that should be fine. Yes, we have the Dashcam mode on. Our menu has 'Loop Recording' rather than Cyclic Record and gives the option of 3, 5 or 10 minutes. At the moment, this is switched off. It could be that we were getting the very irregular breaks in recording (some sections just a few seconds, others 8 minutes or more) because the motion sensor setting was on. This has now been turned off.

Do we need to have Loop Recording turned on?

As @jokiin already said, you need to set the loop recording, to which time suits you better. Personally, I use 5 min clips in my dashcam because when I was using the 3 min set, the "interesting" action always ended up being captured right between clips. :D
Yes, the gaps between clips were caused by the motion sensor being ON. If you had it set to OFF, without Loop Recording activated, the camera would have only recorded a single big 4GB file*, which would be a little over 30 mins of footage, then stop recording and you would've lost anything that might have happened after that.

*- That's the card's FAT32 file system's size limit for a single file.

Right: we'll try the 5 minute loop recording setting. And your clear elucidation is appreciated. Without it, frustration could have caused us to return the camera to Amazon!

Thanks for your kind words. I'd just like to reiterate what Module 79L and jokiin have already said. I hope the camera is working the way you want now. Cheers! :)

LONG STORY SHORT : if anyone needs step by step instructions on how to use SJ4000 (works with M10, SJ4000+ and even SJ5000)

Short story long :

My recommendation for newbies has always been to take a camera that is not expensive and see if it works for them.

However people new to action cam and technology encounter issues from time to time.

With SJ4000 being quite popular action camera, it is a bit strange that nobody created a step by step manual clarifying each and every icon, symbol and function.

One of those "newbies" in action camera world, forum member here @TeriTerryTarry had struggles like everyone else.

He carefully put on a paper each and every question he had and tried to create a manual for SJ4000 by doing a research.

He got in touch with me, and I though it would be great idea to publish this manual both on web and PDF.

Once again, huge huge thanks to @TeriTerryTarry for his work. I am sure people struggling with SJ4000 and how to use it will find this guide of his extremely helpful.

If you have questions or ideas how to improve it, let me or @TeriTerryTarry know.

So all the work has been done by Teri, I just formatted it for the website and added photos.

We will continue to update the manual as new options /questions/ideas appear.

I would also like to thank @jokiin who told Teri to get in touch with me.

Community power!

On the front page of the manual you have a warning about charging? Can you elaborate? I have not received my camera yet, should get it today,
however I believe there are a few ways to charge the battery. 1. Through the car 12v connection, 2. A USB batter charger and 3. A 110v battery charger. Which method has a serious problem?

Thanks.

I had two SJ4000 WiFi's. One of those had a defective AC adapter, causing the camera to overheat severely. When I connected the defective adapter the red and amber lights both turned on. When I connected a properly functioning adapter from the other SJ4000, and another one not supplied with either camera, only the red light turned on. Vice-versa as well: when I connected the defective adapter to the other SJ4000 I got he same results with the lights and overheating. Posted somewhere here on DCT are photos of another charger that overheated and began emitting smoke.

You are correct that all three methods of charging will work with the SJ4000. For US customers I always recommend that AC adapters for any device should be UL-listed. The defective charger in my case was supplied with the camera and was not UL-listed. Please note, however, that all this took place about a year ago. I can't say for sure what adapter if any is now supplied with the camera. Personally, when I use a new adapter I always keep an eye on it for the first half hour to check for overheating.
