SG9665GC, Mini 0806 running off a Lukas 290 hardwire
Hi,

I have a Mini 0806 mounted at the rear and I'm intending on replacing it with a SG9665GC. (Already have a front SG9665GC)

My issue is how to attach the camera mount to the top trim of my rear door hatch.

3M sticky pads don't stick to the trim, it seems the material is some kind of non-porous plastic that won't hold the 3M pads.

I had to use sticky tape and cable ties wrapped around the Mini's GSP mount to hold it in place. (see attached images)

The Mini mount allows the cable ties wrapping but the SG9665GC doesn't have the same set-up.

I don't want to mount the camera directly to the glass as it's aftermarket tinted, I'm worried that the weight of the camera and the movement from opening/closing the hatch door may peel the tint.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

I found a local 3D Printer owner using the following website to 3D print things like this in the past and it worked out nice.

https://www.makexyz.com

I might have to buy a 3D printer one of these days soon to get in on the action myself.

The brick & mortar stores offering 3D printing here quoted around $15 for one print. Found a local printer via 3D Hubs and ended up with a great deal at $8 for one in ABS (100 microns), shipping included.

3D Hubs looks like a great option. Found several printers near by.

ABS or PETG is the way to go
(Avoid PLS, will go soft in the summer)

Out of ABS and PETG, a quick search didn't give me a definitive answer as to which would be better for in-car summer temperatures. With PETG being almost double the price and unavailable in black, I went with ABS for now. Hope the print is accurate and fits my car as intended.

Looks like you've been busy with your new hobby. :D
I've been looking into it. Just have to find some way to make my wife think there's some valid reason to do it.

Good luck with that! :D
Really - she's still not 100% convinced that dash cams are a good idea, even after being rear-ended by a guy on a cell phone. (Nobody hurt and no damage, nothing more than a 'love tap' - so that was the good part.)

My SG9665GC arrived, now it's time to mount to the back of my Mondeo Hatch.

I had 3 local quotes (Melbourne) for the 3D Printing, each with varying prices.

1) ABS Plastics: $40 + $19 postage.

2) PCABS: $100 (didn't mention postage)
ABS: $75

3) SLS Nylon 12 Natural: $43 including postage.

SLS being the cheapest option, but will the material withstand the heat, the guy quoting suggest it will?

Any thoughts on the pricing and material?

Cheers

I just used www.3dhubs.com to get a quote. This quote was Sydney based (Stan's Hub) but should still post to Melbourne..

$15.17 for printing in 200 Micron black PETG + $12.50 delivery, total $27.67.

Thanks Normm,

I had a local guy print it in ABS for $30 (picked up), I will look into your suggestion as I need another mount reprinted.

It turns out that the 3D model does not suit a Ford Mondeo, so I have to slightly modify the height (top bridge) of the mount.

Any ideas how to modify the STL file, I've downloaded 3 different modelling programs, but none seem simple enough to use? I use Adobe Illustrator every day but the 3d programs have no similarities.

I've tried: Blender, FreeCAD ans SketchUpMake.

might have to goto TAFE and learn 3D drawing.

Try TinkerCAD or EasyCAD
(No experience myself just a suggestion)
