Hi from a newbie non techy. When I transfer video from my cheapo dashcam or from my bridge camera to Windows Live Photo-gallery, I see dashcam are AVI files and bridge-cam are MP4 files. For hosting clips I prefer Photobucket or Dropbox. I prefer not to use Youtube. The Hosts' won't load the AVI dashcam files. Is there any way I can transfer them to a useable format please? TIA

"HandBrake" can convert video from nearly any format to many other widely supported codecs. Available for all platforms. It's free.

Yeah i just grabbed the latest version to replace my old copy in my "good things to have" folder

Its been a while since i used it, 2005 or something.

Thanks Dashmellow, a great app, it's free (as you say) what's the catch!! My first attempt 3 weeks ago were 2 shots of about 10 mins. I selected 720p rather than 1080HP, even so the file size was 1.77 GB, way to large for Photobucket. With your Handbrake app I trimmed this down to about 3 mins. A number of beginner mistakes. A mix of sun and rain but should have opened Exposure up to +2/3. I also started the first clip a minute too early - will the Handbrake Editor crop bits off please?

I've had reason to use it recently converting some Mp4

You're welcome!

It is open source software. There is no catch. :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "crop bits off" but you can choose different encoding parameters for the output if you study up on what the options do that you will find in the "Advanced" window. You can also click "web optimized" and you should end up with a smaller file size.

Handbrake is a nice utility but it's not really an "Editor".

Thanks yes, Editor is what I'm looking for, pref free.

In the above sequence I started way to soon. The clock is showing 13:59:00 it would be nice to delete the first boring 48 seconds.
Can you suggest a good (easy to use) Open source Editor?

If the files are in MP4 or mov format then Registrator Viewer is a dead simple program to cut and join videos without reencoding
Thanks Jokin I'll try RV and report back. My cheap dashcam XGODY isn't mentioned on the Registrator Viewer list but I'll give it a try.

It only needs to be on the list for the GPS functionality of particular camera models; otherwise RV should work fine for your purpose.

Thanks again Jokinn and Dashmellow. I struggled to get the 2 selected MP4 clips to load. I suspect prob is at my end. I'll have another go in the morning :)

You just need to climb up the learning curve a bit. I'm sure you'll figure it out. :)
