New Mini 0906 lens

Postman just delivered a new lens, but it didn't say who sent it, no paper work at all. Tracking info from UK Royal Mail said it was sent by Worldwide Express, but that is a shipping company.

So, is this a Mini 0906 lens? I don't want to put it in the wrong camera!

I've fitted the new lens, however there is a problem:

When I power it on it doesn't start. If I press the power button it does start and I see the normal screen display and an image through the new lens, but then it immediately shuts down again!

Everything appears to be working (screen, sensor, temperature sensor, buttons all OK), so why does it shut down?

The lens holder on this new lens had a much flatter base and all the moulding marks were indented so didn't affect it sitting flat on the PCB - big improvement on the last one.

Don't know about the image quality, the 0906 doesn't stay turned on for long enough to be able to focus the lens and it doesn't record anything!

When the rest of us testers messed with the new lenses we had all kind pf problems, mostly boiling down to the flexible cables not being seated properly.
but i think back then our cameras dident come on at all, but your issue might still be the same.

Have you tried to power the thing both ways ? via the mount and via the micro USB port on the camera housing.

No, it definitely runs a firmware, as shown in the log above, but I can try loading it again.

Currently it is still with its case off waiting to be focused so I can't easily try Kamkars suggestion of putting it on its mount in the car.

I'm guessing it is one of the flexi cables not seated correctly, I disconnected all three as well as separating the boards so that I could change the lens base since the new base seems very different to the previous one and maybe it is matched to the new lens. I was hoping there was a clue as to which cable is not right in the logfile so that I don't have to try reseating them all. I'll have another go tomorrow.

yeah it's running but with some failed processes which could be some sort of memory corruption (bit of static when you've had it apart maybe), would reload the firmware just to rule that out and make sure everything is in order, certainly can't hurt, could well be something not seated correctly or a damaged component perhaps, bit of trial and error involved either way I expect

fortunately once the beta test user feedback the FPC issue we scraped the stocked PCBs and change design to the B2B connectors like 806 did. (anyway the B2B conectors works well for at least 2 years in 0806.)
so the 0.3mm pitch FPC design will only be seen in the beta test cameras.

Thanks Kamkar, I've found the problem after mounting it on the windscreen mount in the car.

It's focused now, I just need to solder the speaker wires back on (they couldn't cope with being windscreen mounted) and then reassemble the case...

Yeah the micro USB port, i assume its there as a sort of debug port like on other products.

Maybe it thought it was in parking mode because I used the rear camera socket to provide the power?

The new lens can still see my CPL filter, it is still quite wide angle, I'll have to get a real mini 0806 CPL instead of using the prototype one.

Lens quality seems really good, very difficult to see any chromatic distortion - must have achromatic lens elements?

Also a nice even focus all over the image, no problems in the corners.

The lens reflections are not so good when pointing towards the sun, but it seems OK unless pointing very close to the sun so I don't think it will often be a problem.

It was very easy to focus - I focused it in the car using only the camera LCD and it looks perfect on my computer first attempt!

I will try it out when driving later and see what happens when it gets hot...

The sensor on a DSLR is too big for this type of photo = the depth of field is too small, you need to use a small aperture setting to get anything reasonable.

Before I focused the new mini 0906 lens it could have taken images like these - small sensor = big depth of field (everything in focus). I got a good video of my fingerprint!

Gosha probably used a phone cam with a very small sensor and smaller aperture than the 0906.

That new lens are unlike any i have seen in relation to the 0906, the socket also i think cant remember if the replacement one was smooth or also had that ornamented thread "barrel"
