Dashcams are a poor substitute for real security cams but sometimes it's all you can really do. Which cam you chose is also dependent on whether you have further use for it (such as using it for a dashcam
) Various solutions are available. Being that 'motion detect' and 'g-sensor' functions involve a delay before recording starts with the cheaper cams, my choice is to leave one or more cams recording constantly. The average car battery can probably sustain one cam for 6-8 hours' after that you get battery damage and even a flat battery. There are devices which prevent that damage by monitoring the battery voltage and turning the cam off before damage occurs
There are also pre-buffered cams with 'parking mode' which are chosen for this use but they are the more expensive models, and some of them don't do well at night
You can also use a powerbank to run your cam when parked which is a popular power solution
Also there are no cams offered that work without some light and the more the better. Built-in illuminators do not work- that light
must be from a source outside the car. Currently the best low-light cams use the Sony Exmor sensors which also do OK in daytime.
For constant recording, if you're looking for the cheapest cam to do this reliably I recommend the G1W-S. Against it is it's size and shape which isn't very discreet. If front coverage is all you need the A19S is a good choice.
If budget is no issue then Blackvue has cams with an excellent pre-buffered parking mode but their after-sales service is bollocks
Goluk T-3 pre-buffers at a much better price
Neither does a great job a night but may be good enough for your situation.
So give us a little more info on what kind of lighting you can count on and which direction(s) you need to cover then maybe we can recommend something more specific to your needs. And welcome to DCT!
