Just finished a demo movie showing some features of Dashcam Viewer 3.x. Been meaning to do this for a while and finally got around to it! Even at 14 minutes long I couldn't demonstrate all the features I wanted to (like data exportation, preferences, etc.). Will have to save these for future videos.

Same for me. I tried installing 3.1.6 over 3.1.5 as well as uninstalling 3.1.5 before installing 3.1.6 but either way it still alerts that I'm running 3.1.5 and a new version is available.

I've just bought the full version (3.1.5) and then found there was a new version - I've just updated to 3.1.6.

No doubt I'm doing something wrong but found both versions could not retain the metric parameters in preferences - km/m/°C ... it works for one file (XXX KPH over the movie) but reverts to mph with the next file and whenever I open the program. Is there any way to retain them after opening the preferences file and setting them? I can only close the window and I see no way to save them.

Thank you.

Edit:
Windows 10 64 bit.

if that's a bug @traveler will be able to get it sorted, if it's just a settings thing he will be able to advise (likely if it's a settings thing it's in the manual also), have tagged him so he is made aware of your question

@Beachcomber - as far as I can see, the application keeps these settings in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\earthshinesw (this applies to the current session - if you login with another user, you will have a different set of settings)
What you can do is to check if your currently logged in user account has full permissions on that key (in Regedit, select the key that I mentioned and from the menu select Edit > Permissions)

@jokiin and DarthMaul.
Thanks both for your responses. It's no big deal as the program runs perfectly well other than that one weirdo. I'll wait to see if Traveller can comment. I am always logged in on my Windows desktop as Administrator so it shouldn't be a user problem. Also, I can set preferences as metric with a set of files to play, it displays the first with kph then reverts to mph as it begins the second and all subsequent files.

You can send John an email regarding this: https://dashcamviewer.com/contact/
However, I would try this: uninstall the application, delete the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\earthshinesw and then reinstall the newest version again. You will probably need to enter the serial number again after this, but there's a great chance that it will work properly after that. Just FYI I just upgraded from 3.1.5 to 3.1.6 just like you did and I don't have this problem.
However, can you check the permissions on that key and also check the presence of this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\earthshinesw\DashcamViewer\configuration\outUnits
It's a REG_DWORD value, and it should be 1 for KM/h and 0 for Mph

Hi DarthMaul, many thanks. I did check outUnits and it probably hasn't been correctly set as it has the value "0x00000000 (0)". This is after 'Preferences' has been edited to the three metric units. Those were the only parameters modified from the original default settings, which, it seems, never get updated despite invoked for the first video file.

It may have something to do with how I ran with the free version for a few days then used the opening screen to click on 'purchase', then to apply the registration key to that same copy (3.1.5). It then seemed to work okay but with the mph notation after the first file (although the movie correctly showed kph on the text).
Or maybe not.

I guess I should re-install ... but later, no time now.

@Beachcomber I couldn't repeat the issue, but I think I know what's happening: There's a feature in Dashcam Viewer that allows you to save certain settings on a per-movie basis. For example, you can have DCV play one video with units of km/h and the next with mph if you want. I'm thinking that somehow this feature was activated by accident. The way to tell is by the little disk icon (see below). If it is green, that means there is a settings file active which is overriding the settings of the previous video. To get rid of these settings, just click the icon again until it is blue. A blue disk icon means that no special settings are active.

@DarthMaul Thanks for providing the instructions on deleting Dashcam Viewer startup settings. Deleting these settings can be useful for debugging purposes since it reverts Dashcam Viewer back to its virgin state. But no need to do this through Regedit! There is a "hidden" shortcut method: Startup Dashcam Viewer with the Shift-key held down. You will see a dialog box asking if you want to delete all settings:

reset_all_settings_sm1.jpg

If you click "Yes", it will clear all of DCV's startup settings just as if you cleared them through Regedit.

John

@traveler Thank you John for your support.
However, the problem persists. When the program opens the preferences are always set to mph whatever the last session was. I set to kph, which then switches the disk icon to green. I open the mp4 file folder and select the files. The first movie starts with the disk green and kph, the 2nd file resets the disk icon (not green) and back to mph. When I click on the green disk I am clearing my kph settings and reverting to the default, mph. I seem unable to get my kph settings saved as default - perhaps due to my ignorance about using the program or an error in installing.

I'll get round to re-installing later.

@Beachcomber If you're seeing a green disk icon, then that likely explains why the units are switching. The green disk icon indicates that there is a settings file overriding your defaults. The settings file probably has units of km/h but the program's default is mph. To fix this you just need to delete any .dcv files you may have accidentally created. You can delete them by clicking the green icon any time you see it.

The other method is to find and delete any .dcv files in your video folder AND in your Documents folder. For most dashcam use, you never need to create a .dcv settings file so you should never see a green disk icon (it should always be blue).

After you've eliminated all the .dcv settings files, you are now at a 'clean slate' position (no need to reinstall). If you're units are in mph, click once in the Speedometer and they will change to km/h once and forever (or change units through the Preferences).

Thank you John, it's solved. Your message prompted me to examine the micro SD card movie folder and embedded in the middle of the many .mp4 files was one lonely .dcv file. Removing it and setting the three metric parameters in 'Preferences' resulted in ALL movie files being contiguously played with kph heading. And closing and revoking Dashcam Viewer started immediately with kph as default.

Great program, great support. Thanks again.

Brian.
