To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

It is interesting to see 70mai's stated rationale for using a lithium-ion battery rather than a super-capacitor, although they admit that lithium batteries do not fare well in extreme temperatures. They also state that they are looking into using super-capacitors due to extensive user feedback...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

The vast majority of dash cams that are powered by a rechargeable battery rather than a super-capacitor use Lithium-Polymer batteries (LiPo). A few cameras like the 70mai A810 use a proprietary (with wire leads) 14500 (AA size) lithium-ion battery (Li-ion). Lithium-Polymer batteries are merely...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

Despite some friction I don't think it was a bad thing to bring up RTC batteries. It's an interesting discussion. It's important to note that there is a distinction between battery powered dash cams and RTC batteries since even super-capacitor powered dash cams have RTC batteries. Those of us...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

I'm not 100% certain about what has been used in most dash cams but I know that sometimes Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) RTC batteries have been used. Super-capacitors have also been used in dash cams as RTC back-up but they don't hold a charge as long as a battery. Selecting a Backup Source...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

Who, you or me? ;) You can call it "arguing for arguments sake" and"conflation", but if you make a disdainful, condescending remark suggesting that a widely used electronics industry practice like backing up a device's clock and calendar with a rechargeable battery is just "too bad", you will...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

The button battery doesn't power the camera, it only acts as a back up power supply for the clock circuitry when the camera is not recording. The camera needs to know your time zone in the first place which must be entered manually. No programming technique will automatically know your time...

    VS1 as rear camera?

The VS1 camera's image can be flipped 180º and it can be reversed (mirrored) if needed. You may be able to mount the camera directly on the rear deck of your car, right behind the seats.

I have to disagree. Losing the time on a car radio is really not a significant problem in comparison a dash cams are recording evidence. Loading from GPS at boot-up may or may not adjust for DST if it doesn't remember your time zone and it can take quite awhile after you leave your house in the...

To remove or not to remove the dashcam in hot weather

Too bad? ......Not sure why you have a problem with using a RTC batterry in dash cams. It has been a reliable solution that has been used in most dash cams for many years now. Real Time Clock batteries do fail eventually but they tend to last quite a while and they are rechargeable batteries, so...

Replace the key fob battery at every service? Really? In my experience automotive key fob batteries last for years without need for any attention. Replacing the lithium coin cell batteries in a key fob at every vehicle servicing seems wildly excessive to me.

The list of shame fake 4K dash cameras Ultra HD

This factoid was previously mentioned on Saturday by @Agie but I had known that already from a basic internet search, as it seems to be widely reported if you look for the info. I guess that's why I questioned why you were going to purchase one of these gems in the first place.

Viofo has always listed the temperature parameters for their cameras and a few other manufacturers do as well. Still, there is a difference between "maximum" operating temperature during normal service and operating a camera in the cabin of an automobile on a hot sunny day, which is more or less...

    Dashcams

I use something very similar to this which gives me 3 12V sockets and it mounts nicely and securely in my center console with some VHB tape. There are hard wire versions of these available with different numbers of sockets. You'll find many of these and many variants on Amazon, eBay and AliExpress.

With a few exceptions, many, if not most people will likely realize that an 8K dash cam isn't real. Nevertheless, I understand your good intentions. But a PSA? "A public service announcement (PSA) is a message in the public interest disseminated by the media without charge to raise...
