aspect ratio

Since the 1944 resolution aspect ratio is 4:3, does it make sense to use it compared to 1440 which is 16:9? Seems to just capture a lot of sky and buildings. However I wonder if using 1440 means losing detail due to lower resolution? Or is the extra resolution for 1944 just for the areas cropped...
