I have only ever owned one other dashcam and it was a low-res piece of junk. But it had a feature that I liked: a lock button to prevent erasure of the current video. Great to have when you witness something weird.

Does the 70mai have any similar feature? If you want to prevent writing over a video, is there any way to do that other than downloading it to your phone?

With the English firmware, this is possible with the Voice Command: "RECORD VIDEO"
Or press the 2nd button from the left.

But does this save the active video, or start recording only from when you issue the command? Usually when I want to record something, it's already happening.

Edit: Found it in the manual:

An emergency video is a normal video that is being recorded plus another 30s video. Therefore, its minimum length is 31 seconds, and its maximum length is 1 minute and 30 seconds.

That's exactly how it is.
With lead time, it's all backed up on the video.

So...if you are "unlucky" and get something happen ones dash cam starts new video file , you will get "locked" only those few seconds and next 30 seconds. That do not sound very smart :)
