Thanks to @Daniel K and Akenori for sending a working sample of their NX01 for evaluation and testing.

Manufacturer link Akenori

Initial impressions:
- Very wide dynamic range - excellent control of colour, noise and highlights both day & night
- Some loss of fine detail due to noise reduction
- The horizontal FOV is similar to the 90degree A-lens on my Mobius 1
- Blocking evident in high detail areas, perhaps due to relatively low bitrate (NX01 11.8Mbps / SG9665GC 14.7Mbps / Mobius1 17.7Mbps)
- Mounting cradle is being developed for off-road DVR use - I have been experimenting with different options to adjust the vertical FOV

Here are a few video samples and screenshots from my testing so far, comparing the NX01 to my Mobius 1 and SG9665GC cameras:

Daytime video:
Top = NX01
Left = Mobius 1
Right = SG9665GC

I tested the NX01 today as a rear view camera, where the high dynamic range did well coping with headlights in the night scene.
Note: The dark shadow in the lower middle of the image is the rear screen heating element.

Is it possible to aim the lens any lower?

The rear-facing video was taken with the original mounting cradle attached directly to my rear screen, and the lens aimed as low as it will go.

In other words, it isn't possible to get a bit of the dash and hood into view?

It's quite a narrow FOV lens, so when it's front-facing you don't really get to see the dash and hood.

impressive design, love that the lens is 'isolated'

i think a slightly wider fov would be ideal.

really a shame about the battery

I am curious that they haven't logged in for 2.5 months now, and their website hasn't changed from saying that sales will start on February 1st 2017.

does anyone know what happened to the NX01 dashcam and the fate of Akenori?

My last contact with Akenori was just after my initial review in December 2016. I sent a follow-up enquiry in January but I did not hear back from them.

I'm hoping that they are working on a new camera using their very good image processing in a more conventional body shape.

Tony very good work on the review. this is intriguing for sure,. I like it in a lot of ways.
