Is it normal that my dash cam only event recordings while I’m driving. The only times it normal records are when I’m stopped at a stoplight. The dash cam is almost always event recording (red not orange light) while I’m driving. Is this normal or indicative of malfunction?

This is not normal functioning. Go into the menu and reset everything to "Default" and try again. If you have the cam hardwired directly to the car, it might be that the red and yellow wires were reversed on installation but try the default settings first.

Won't be wiring, Blackvue is two wire, mode changes etc are all done in software

Just in case you can try to reflash the firmware.
