BlackVue Elite 10 Dual 4K - Test/Review - RCG

motion detection mode, but with the actual motion detection turned Off, so it's only recording for prebuffer events and connected to the cloud

I get about 8-10 hours with Cloud active when using time lapse parking mode. That's from a full battery with very limited Cloud access checks. Any active viewing for longer periods or downloading reduces the time.

I found that having it set to low power parking mode sometimes works best for most of my cases, I get weeks of battery life in that mode.

A good mix of the two is to set as low power parking mode, but once it gone to sleep, go into the app and change the setting to time lapse.
It then changes to time lapse next time to triggers an event and Cloud auto turns back on.
You can then extend the parking period, but also check that when Cloud is active that an even had occurred, so you can log in and check, then change back to low power if needed to let it go back to sleep

Thank you for your input, Dan. If I remember correctly, you cannot change the modes 'on the fly' because once the camera goes into sleep mode, you need to make adjustments inside the car with the engine running to provide power again, IIRC, please correct me if I'm wrong.

But again, I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the motion detection mode for a dashcam in the first place - Why would we need this feature? Will it replace my HomeKit or Ring camera? 🤣 We don't have IR scanning to rely on, so it's probably using AI pixel identification with a very low-MP camera.
We just need a regular G-sensor-triggered mode

You can make adjustments on the fly using the app.
It then updates the settings remotely to the camera when it next links back to the Cloud
(See the app image below - the text at the bottom after you attempt to change setting on the fly when the camera is currently disconnected from the cloud).

"After BlackVue is connected to the cloud, the settings will be saved"

This is a really good feature, but you can change things at ANY time, and it just updates the camera automatically next time it connects to the cloud, either from turning on the vehicle, or an event triggering it to wake up.

Oh yeah, I’m definitely familiar with that. however, it only activates the next time you start the car, which somewhat defeats its purpose since the camera will remain off if you're not around or busy.

Maybe here’s another suggestion for improvement- the software could "briefly wake up" the camera (even if the voltage is at the lower limit) just to apply the changed settings - similar to event detection in Low Power Mode, where it turns on to upload the video and then turns off.

BlackVue and Thinkware dash cameras provide power to their LTE module. When the BlackVue dash camera goes into low power parking mode, it's my understanding that the dash camera turns off the power to the LTE module. There's no way for the LTE module to wake up the dash camera. Other dash camera brands like Vantrue and 70mai pass power through their LTE module and then to the dash camera. Those LTE modules can wake up the dash camera in response to remote requests because they remain semi-functional in those states, but there may be time limits or low voltage limits that will cause the LTE module to turn off as well.

Hey there, RCG, thanks for the technical explanation perspective, it's really interesting. I do wonder if this is something that could be updated via firmware for each product, after all. But I doubt it'll happen- maybe in the Elite 11? Haha.

When I low power parking mode, if the camera detects an event (sometimes from strong wind or a passing vehicle), the camera wakes back up for usually 1-2 minutes to record the event and backup to the cloud storage (if you have cloud storage option).
But the fact that the camera wakes back up, means it reconnects to the Cloud for LTE, so it will update the settings you requested previously.

So if you've accidentally set it to low power parking mode, but you actually want to keep checking in the vehicle remotely, you can change the settings in the app, and next time it picks up a random event (hopefully not an actual crash) it will connect to cloud and update you settings
If you kept it in low power parking mode, it will go back to sleep after the event passes in usually 1-2 minutes.

So you don't need to restart the ignition of the car for it to update or change settings, it just needs an event to trigger it to wake up temporarily.
