I’ve been looking at some of these low cost car trackers, for some time

these are more or less all very similar to each other in that they use GPS and a SIM card to communicate with your smart phone, I’m just looking for something that can be easy to set up and use, I see with most of these you have to send text messages to set them up, I was wondering if there were any that with the right app, you could set them up using the app and then communicate with the tracker with the SIM card to track your car (should it be stolen)

has anyone used/come across one of these or has any opinions/information to help me choose

many thanks

I use this vectu GPS tracker for my DJI phantom quadcopter. when it's not attached to my drone, it's hardwired and hidden in my car. it does have an app for iOS and android as well as a website where you can login and check on the activity. it updates information every minute when it's activated. it uses GPS and sends info over 2G mobile networks. the initial price comes with a year of service. service after that costs $24/year. you do not have to buy a separate pre-paid SIM card. somehow, this device claims it will send data anywhere in the world over 2G with no additional fees and the reviews I've read seem to back that up. the built in battery will last for over an hour which is plenty when it's on my quadcopter. the only thing that concerns me is that mobile carriers will phase out 2G data in the coming years and will render this device useless. but I won't worry about that until I have to.

wouldn't bother...

Am using a £25 tracker blocker to "disappear" as van has tracker fitted...!!

try using trackimos 3g GPS device..1year free subscription then low monthly cost and i can say the device is very reliable one.
Bought their 2G model over a year ago to track my DJI Phantom 3 drone, but now the 2G phone service is beginning to shut down so this device is becoming obsolete, unfortunately Trackimo is not offering any of us 2G tracker owners any discount to upgrade to the 3G model, so no deal with Trackimo :(

Any government employee should have one of these inserted so we could check we get out moneys worth

It would just be wasting more money because we already know we're not getting what we pay for. :(

And I know where I'd like to insert them

As a Ham Radio licensee I can use this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Packet_Reporting_System
Never any further fees or costs once it's set up and you can track your vehicle all over the US and any other place using this system on any internet-connected computer or smartphone ;) There are 'kits' sold where it's simple and easy to do or you can homebrew it, plus it can keep up with several of your vehicles, not just one. Can't be used for business or commercial use though- Ham is for personal use only but it's not hard to get licensed for anymore so it's a viable solution :D
