Hey all,

Looking to get the A129 Plus Duo, but my windshield has 80% Suntek Ceramic Tint, so I am not sure if a CPL filter is going to reduce the image quality. What do you guys think?

Similar setup (Viofo A129 Duo) and 80% tint on front window. The short answer is NO DON'T use a CPL FILTER. It'll cause a Halo effect on the video. There's no getting around this problem.

Notes taken, ordered the A129 Plus Duo without the CPL filters. Hopefully the glare problem won't be too bad.

Video is very acceptable without CPL. Few issues. Some glare in sun, but far worse with CPL.

Even it was aligned?
for it to work it needs to be aligned correctly, this will give rainbow effect if used behind tint, perhaps it wouldn't have that effect if it wasn't aligned correctly, but it also wouldn't work anyway if that was the case

short answer, working CPL and tint and you'll get rainbows

It have nothing to do with alignment, basically you have 2 cpl filters going, on the camera and in your tint.

When i wear my polarized sunglasses i can not watch my phone display, at least not without tilting my head 90 degrees, the phone display are also polarized but here it just give darkness instead of a rainbow artifact.
When i look at my rear window wearing my sunglasses it is dotted for some reason, i have not put any tint there and as it is a rock bottom cheap Suzuki car i doubt the factory have, but there is something for sure.

Depends on what sort of tint, the ceramic tints seem particularly bad, windcreen glass manufactured as tinted glass never has any issues.

If the tint is OK through polarised sunglasses then it should be OK through the CPL.

Since the alignment of the polarisation effect of the tint varies across the image, there is no way to avoid problems by alignment.

Need to learn to use portrait mode!
Although the phone should be at 45 degrees so that it is OK in both modes...

That is true not all tint are polarized, same with sunglasses.
I do use CPL on my rear camera too, and have no rainbow artifact there.
My phone actually can swivel to portrait mode on its door glass mount, but it do get dangerously close to steering wheel then.

Factory tint isn't a film, doesn't have the same effect, to clarify, CPL and aftermarket tint and you'll get rainbows [emoji304]

Yep. Aftermarket tints such as Ceramic are a film that goes over the window. Downside, it not only disallows usage of the CPL without "rainbow / halo" effect, but lessens the amount of light the camera receives. So Plates are darker during day (harder to read) and at night you lose visibility in low lighted areas.

Despite some of the comments we've seen in this thread there is indeed a way of "getting around this problem".

If you find you have a problem with bad windshield reflections and are unable to use a CPL because of tinted glass consider installing a black dash mat. Dash mats can actually perform better than a CPL.
Many people don't want to use a dash mat because they think they look ugly but a good quality one, properly installed can look just fine and will also reduce glare and eyestrain as well as eliminating most reflections into the camera lens. They also protect your dashboard from direct sunlight and UV.

The flat black suede type is the one you want.

Indeed, i would prefer a nice dashcmat over using CPL, but i dont have a nice dashmat, just something DIY which do also work fine, but i do use both.
As i do not want to part with things of myself in exchange for a nice dashmat that fit my car, i would "kill" a random socialist at the providers choice.

don't have those here unfortunately, wish we did, a lot of the dashmats that we do have here are made of an acrylic carpet that has shiny fibers and it actually reflects really badly, worse than the dashboard in some cases, here they were only ever about protecting the dashboard from cracking from the sun

Yes, I recall we discussed that before quite some time ago. I would have thought by now someone in your neck of the woods might have started to offer something more appealing to dash cam users. In a pinch it would be possible to paint the shiny ones with flat black camo paint sort of like what I did with the suede one. It's been five years now and the thing still looks perfect!

FWIW, the OP is American so what I recommended is available to him. ( or anyone else with a left hand drive vehicle)

dashmats aren't a big market here so it's generally just the cheap brands that cater to this market, no premium options sadly
