I'm an indie developer and a recent dashcam enthusiast. I built Dashcam Export because I wanted a better and faster way to review and export my multi-camera footage on Mac.

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm a Mac user and recent dashcam first-timer, and I've already been frustrated with the lack of good macOS options for managing and exporting footage. I'm thinking about building something to scratch my own itch, but before I go down that rabbit hole, I wanted to see what others are experiencing.

A few questions for my fellow Mac users:

1. What dashcam(s) are you currently using? (Brand/model appreciated!)
2. Have you found any decent software for managing your footage on macOS?
- If so, what are you using?
- What did it cost? (One-time purchase, subscription, free?)
- Does it actually work well, or just "good enough"?
3. If you haven't found anything good, what's your current workaround?
- Just Finder and hoping for the best?
- Running Windows software in a VM or Boot Camp?
- Some combination of free tools duct-taped together?
4. What are your biggest frustrations with your current setup?
- File organization chaos?
- Syncing front + rear camera clips?
- GPS/metadata headaches?
- Export and format issues?
- Manufacturer software that's Windows-only or just plain bad?
5. How important is multiplexed output to you? (Combining front/rear into a single file, picture-in-picture, side-by-side, etc.) As a newbie, this seems like a must-have to me, but I'm curious if more experienced users feel the same or have other priorities.
6. If a solid native Mac app existed, what would it need to do to be worth paying for? And what would you consider a fair price?

I've had trouble finding modern looking, good Mac-native options for this, and I'm curious if others have had better luck or are just making do with workarounds.

Even if you just want to vent about your current workflow, I'd love to hear it!

Operating System Software doesn't matter.

Dashcams record to MicroSD cards. You plug in the MicroSD card to the computer and pull the videos off directly. Alternatively, videos can be downloaded from the dashcam to your cellphone via the "Wifi", and then transferred from your cellphone to the computer.

Software to edit videos and playback clips is unrelated to the dashcam itself.

This is something I've struggled with for a while and mostly use VLC because it has great compatibility with lots of different codecs and it's nice and fast so it's easy to quickly fly through a bunch of different clips. It's also free which is a bonus. There's a few quirks with playlists and I wish I could get rid of the popup saying files are missing after I've renamed them, but those are minor annoyances. I've purchased Dashcam Viewer, but I never use it because it takes so long to initially load all the videos, GPS data, etc. and so it immediately gets bogged down.

Being able to have native multiplexing would be an awesome feature!

I'm thinking something like this where you can sort videos by sessions, automatically pieced together to form either a driving or parking session. Then it's just a matter of selecting multiplex or single video format and export.

How would you say this resonates if the startup time is fast?

Davinci Resolve, Capcut, etc. There are quite a few choices depending upon comfort level. However, most people who utilize dashcam videos don't undertake extensive editing. You're not making a Hollywood cinematic movie. A majority of dashcam videos are used as evidence in insurance claim, and to a lesser degree, criminal cases. Basically, people enable the Dashcam Wifi (Intranet, doesn't provide an actual signal to connect to internet), connect their cellphone to the wifi, watch or download videos. Alternatively, you can eject memory card and place it into a card reader / your pc to view videos. Thereafter, people mostly splice the (cut) the section required to prove their claim.

People on here doing reviews do more advanced editing to showcase and compare cameras. Still, even most reviewers don't go out of their way to make an elaborate video. Your exceptions are people like @SafeDriveSolutions who runs a business comparing multiple cameras and features for financial gain. It's his line of work.

GPS Data is useful if in an unfamiliar area and needing to prove the location for a claim or crime. However, if coordinates are overwritten onto the video, then the alternative benefit is simply seeing the street you've traveled upon when the incident happened.

For most, this isn't necessary and I also use VLC.

Maybe you can try the multiplexing feature of the VIOFO dashcam player in the next version.

I would advise people not send you a screenshot of their directory. I appreciate that you're being cautious, let me rephrase that:

1. I'm not interested in where the files are stored, just the naming convention of the files, including date and timestamps, ids, indicators of camera position etc.
2. I don't care about the format it comes in, screenshot was just a suggestion for less technical users - I'll even take scribbles on a paper napkin if needed.
3. tree is a well established program in command-line user circles.
4. I might be new to the forum, but I'm attaching my name and real identity to my work. The fact that the app is distributed through Testflight means that Apple has also confirmed my identity and that they are doing scans for malware, etc.

It's already coded in such a way that the user selects the root of their file tree. I just need to cover the variety of naming conventions for the clips. Now, I'm currently covering the VIOFO naming convention and I'm adding others that are available on the Internet. I'm also adding a fallback that will make educated guesses.

Please let me know if there are any other questions. It's going up on the Apple App Store soon, probably this week or weekend, but I wanted to have some early testers give it a quick go first to spot any glaring gaps.

• Multiplex export: Combine all angles into a single video.
• Multi-session export: Stitch clips from different sessions with smooth transitions. Great for road trip compilations and one of my main motivations for writing the app.
• GPU-accelerated: Native macOS app with Metal rendering.

Supported cameras:​

• Tesla (Sentry Mode / Dashcam)
• VIOFO (A129, A139, etc.)
• BlackVue (DR900, DR750, etc.)
• Generic timestamp-based formats

Screenshots:​

Your sessions are on the left hand side with the player taking up the majority of the screen. You can scrub through the footage without any delay. The player updates as fast as your disk can serve the images.

The default view for a camera with three cameras is the stacked layout, which is my favorite.

It's also possible to show the videos in a wider format. Picture-in-picture is also one of the other options available during export.

You can mark in-and-out points using the key I and O, and you can add as many of those as you want to, over several sessions. When you export, they all get combined to one long clip with optional transitions between the clips.

Export to Photos​

One of the export options is the Apple Photos app. This is particularly useful if you want to share the video with friends and family since you get access to all the sharing options available in Photos.

Congrats on the release! I'm testing the latest beta in Testflight right now (1.0.1 (1)) and it's soooo nice having native capabilities for displaying multiple channels at once like this! Is there a way to rename the cameras? Maybe it can automatically recognize the model stamps embedded in the video along with the file names to recognize which camera is front/rear/telephoto/cabin etc.? Edit: I see it can label clips as front/rear sometimes, but not always. I can PM you with some screenshots with file name info.

It seems to work better with locally hosted files. I can stream files from my NAS (via 2.5 gigabit ethernet), but it's still a bit laggy as it's loading all the videos, plus there can be delays between when I hit play/pause and when it happens, as well as when I click forward or backward in the timeline and wait for it to jump to that part. With local videos it's very snappy, so it must just be bandwidth restrictions.

I like that you've got several prebuilt choices for layouts for the different camera angles, and it works with driving/parking/protected files.

Oh, I just got a crash while loading in a directory of local A329T videos. It worked previously and when I relaunched the app, but not sure what triggered the crash. I'm also noticing that it's not loading all the clips in the directory. Plus it's also not displaying any of the telephoto clips, just the front/rear. The A329S will work fine with 3CH clips.

I've actually released a couple of versions since then, the latest being 1.2.0 (4). I thought it was automatically available for testers, but it seems not. I've added it to Test Flight now and you should have received an email to try it out. It contains tons of improvements, like multi-session exports, multiple in-and-out markers per session, localization to 17 languages, and a way smoother UI.

I think being able to rename cameras makes sense, but I need to think a bit about how to store that persistently. Ideally, I'd want all cameras to be given the correct name on discovery and the user not having to tweak anything. But it might be a good idea for users to define their own mapping of filename-pattern -> camera-names. I'll need to give it some thought before I implement it.

The current implementation should recognize all camera angles automatically, so if it doesn't I'd appreciate if you send me a report so that I can fix it. I did see a PM with some details, I'll dig into that as soon as I can.

The speed thing is most definitely I/O. While the streaming speed of a network device might be high, the performance would be most obvious when loading different files, as you do when scanning. Once loaded (as in, hitting play) I expect the streaming to work well, but every jump in time or to a new file I would expect to be slower.

If you do get crashes, please use the "Report to Apple" option so that I get a copy. But I hope that you wouldn't get the same crashes in 1.2.0. Please try it out and let me know.

PS. I might not be able to get to the fixes above for a couple of days. My mother just came to the Philippines to visit her grandkids (and me) yesterday, so I'm taking a few days off from both my day job and my side projects. I hope you will have patience. 🙂

Hi! Sorry, but I think the website, which is supposed to fetch the current price from App Store, failed to fetch it and showed the regular price. But you know what, It's actually $19.99 in the App Store once you click through to get there.

The purchase covers updates. I'd only release a version 2 if I have to do a major rewrite.
