I use this free software to edit videos.
There is a rather steep learning curve, but it's not too difficult.
1) Configure the 'Project Settings'.
2) Import your media.
3) Highlight your clips and create a new timeline.
4) Trim your videos via the 'cut' menu (icons at bottom of screen) and scissors icon (left of screen).
Delete the bits you don't want and move onto the 'Edit' menu.
Add some subtitles.
Mute the audio, if you're worried about receiving DMA strikes for background music on YouTube.
Once you're happy with your edit, you can move to 'Deliver'.
I export as uncompressed .avi.
My final videos are converted to .mp4 using Vidcoder
This is a GUI front end for Handbrake and includes functionality that has been removed from Handbrake -i.e. two pass VBR encoding. This provides a better quality video at the same overall file size by allocating mode codec bandwidth to 'complicated' footage and less to 'simple' footage.
