I switched vehicles and I’ve worn out two cigarette chargers. The way I hardwired my old vehicle is gonna be a bit differently this time. I really don’t feel like re-running the power cord again around all the trim. So what I’m gonna do is just use the old cigarette lighter that has already been run and tap in to a power source. My question is do I need those diode’s and capacitors when I do it? Or can I just run the negative and positive into my power source in the camera will be OK?

That is a voltage regulator and is essential.

If you sandpaper the contacts on the plug then you can soldier to it, or just buy an extra 12v socket to plug it into.

Do you mean these two points? Is it ok to cover the board with electrical tape? You know, to kind of protect it? Or do you thing they’ll get a little warm and melt the tape?

Yes, make sure you get them the right way around.

It will get a bit warm, especially the chip on the other side, I suggest putting the whole thing in some wide heat shrink tube rather than tape, or maybe put it in a small plastic box or jar.
