As previously stated by kamkar, dash cams arent really set it and forget it devices, like many tech items you need to occasionally check on it to ensure its working. When I install a dash cam in family or friends cars I will usually pull the card out of them to check all is working okay in the camera and that theres no issues, something which is a big thing with dash cams is you need a good quality SD card and make sure you format it every once in a while. This is how I found out my sisters MDC150 had popped its clogs and was swiftly replaced. Hope you can get your footage recovered!
