So the trailer's brakes had frozen on and it's electrics had frozen off?
Given that the tractor and other vehicles still seemed to have decent grip and was having to drag the trailer, that probably wasn't too scary.

- More than my wife thinks I need.
Not so sure he was dragging the trailer as much as being pushed by it. Be interesting to get @dash riposki 's opinion.

I'm fairly certain that it's brakes were stuck on, when they stop there are two big black skid marks left by the trailer wheels. I don't see any evidence of him being pushed, the only problem was that the trailer wanted to slide down the camber so he was driving the tractor to the left to stop it sliding off the right of the road - the trailer was trying to pull the tractor down the camber because it's brakes were locked, not trying to push it down the hill.
Also, the trailer lights were not connected so maybe that driver had been sent to recover the trailer using the heaviest tractor unit they had, and he had some experience of doing that.

Watched through it and thought "pretty good" till at the end where I saw it was a tandem- that was really impressive π
And I'm wondering what the closest cop thought he was going to do; it's clear the trucker wasn't going to run away or do something stupid. The trucker was doing the right thing- getting his rig out of the traffic lanes so he could stop in the safest manner. He would have done that whether a cop was present or not with the brakes locked- not any other choice there at all. What did the Cop want- for him to stop right now where all traffic lanes would be blocked with the rig possibly sliding off and crashing? Not smart driving the cruiser behind a sliding trailer on the downhill side. Sheesh, that cop needs to retake his kindergarten classes. He ain't to be trusted with even a squirt gun given his intelligence level. At least the other Cops had enough brains to hang back out of any possible harm's way.

Nice, i did the same with a similar rig when i was getting my license, not on a snowy downward road, but on a closed test facility with water and a little soap i assume added to the road surface.
Only me and one other guy dident Jackknife the rig bringing the safty chains in between the 2 parts in play, but i was the only one that did that 180 turn repeatedly π
Was good fun and something else than drifting a car thats for sure π
Trucker did well i think keeping speed to a minimum ( braking would ruin everything ) and speeding up to straiten out would also just compound the problems.

I don't totally understand what was going on, but my guess is there may have been an earlier incident, a jackknife which damaged the air and electric connection to the second trailer. I don't see any lights on the second trailer, so something more involved happened than the brakes just being locked up.
It does look to me like the cops are just escorting the truck until it can move out of the way, somewhat.
The road surface is slippery, it's not such a big deal to drag the second trailer with the brakes locked up, (which, ideally is the lighter one of the set.....'ideally' π ) The default position of truck brakes on the tractor and trailers is 'set', the air pressure from the truck is what releases them, keeps them open. My guess is the FedWREX truck jacknifed, was blocking busy I-80, and they asked if he could move the truck.
When it's really cold, the brakes on the truck or trailer can freeze closed when you're parked overnight. If it's the trailer brakes, it's not so bad, assuming the pavement is not dry. π You can drag the trailer slowly a bit until the brakes release. If it's the tractor brakes frozen, you're not moving.

I am also thinking at least the electrical connection to the trailer might be broken by too much flex earlier on, i am not quite sure if the trailer is breaking due to no air supply at this time.
It seem to follow the pulling unit alright when the road is level, but as soon as there is some angle to one side the trailer want to slide that way.
If the trailer is without brakes / having the brakes slammed due to air loss, then i do think its asking much by the police to ask him to go out of his way and break the law moving a vehicle thats clearly not in roadworthy condition.
Off course the cops are shadowing him as he is driving along, but thats also the least they could do if they asked him to break the law and not least do so in this way in such conditions such a place.
I could see this ending in grief quite easily.
Having reviewed the footage again, i do think there may be a brake issue with the trailer. So really he should not have taken a chance like that but waited for assistance / salvage to arrive.
Cops probably nagging him to move the truck, and i can understand him taking a chance, but i also think the conditions and location in mind he really is gambling that trucker.
So hat off to a ballsy driver getting the job done π

The problem was not stopping, the only problem was keeping the second trailer with the brakes locked on the pavement, and preferably not hitting anything. He could come to a stop at any time. π I don't see anything 'heroic'. The driver screwed up, earlier, when he jacked the truck, doing the damage which ended up with the brakes locked on the second trailer. If he had been that careful earlier, he never would have made the news. :0
(Not a fan of 'FedWrex' trucks, who ignore speed limits, tailgate, and other ignorant stuff they claim is due to tight scheduling)

They should probably have attached a tow rope to one of the police vehicles so that it could stop the trailer sliding down the camber, wouldn't have taken much to keep it nearly straight, with the wheels locked it had zero steering to stop it going with gravity once it was sliding.
