Hi all,

I'm having trouble with a garmin 45 dash cam and getting it to charge with the provided mini USB cable from the hardwire kit I purchased (not garmin parking mode cable).

So I ordered this hardwire kit: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/182711653899

It is apparently compatible with the 45 but I'm getting a message on the 45 saying that it cannot charge with this cable. So I'm looking for guidance on what to do. I'm not very savvy with this kind of thing but can get by, I initially researched and thought it was only the 55 that would have this issue. Anyway, after some research I was thinking of the following 3 options:

1. Cut the mini USB off the cigarette charger that came with the garmin and attach it to the mini USB cable from the hardwire kit if possible? As I came across something about garmin cables having a resistor installed in the mini USB which allows it to charge(?)

2. Take apart the garmin cigarette charger and splice the wires onto the hardwire kit after the 12v to 5v adapter?

3. Be done with it and splash out on a parking mode cable and another piggyback fuse to install properly?

Would 1 and 2 be possible? If so, how and is it fairly easy?

Hoping someone can help so I can figure it out without spending more £!

Thanks in advance, Tom.

I'd be sceptical of that hardwire kit working with your Garmin

I agree, it's my fault for trying to cut corners. I should have just purchased the garmin parking cable. I researched before purchasing and was informed it would work for the 35 and 45 but not 55 so went for it. It works as far as providing power to the device but doesn't charge so eventually the 45 shuts off with low battery and I need to charge it up again and it works for a month or so till the battery is dead again.

I'm looking to buy a Garmin power unit as i've read somewhere that the parking system will not work without the correct Garmin cable.

Indeed, the days where you could use generic hard wire kits are long gone, the norm now pretty much is you need the same brand thru out to get full feature support.
In some cases you even have to be careful as the brand might have 2 hard wire kits for old and new hardware, this is for instance the case with viofo where at least the USB plug that go into the camera to power it have changed to USB C for the new models,,,,, well at least the A139 model.
