Garmin 55 DIY Power

sorry if these have been asked a few times, i had a look through but couldn't see a full answer:

1. Can the DC 55 be powered using the USB cable supplied, i.e. from a USB phone charger etc. so i can test/setup the unit while at home. When i plug into PC it goes into PC mode. I am happy to use the supplied Garmin USB cable, but every charger i try, i get the Please use Garmin Cable error - i AM using a Garmin cable?

2. I want to hardwire to car fuse box and use a double fuse point to jumper. I do not want to cut the supplied car charge cable. I am happy to solder and wire up. What is the best approach to ensure my new cabling is supported by the DC55, i do not want Parking mode.

For info. Just made up a lead to run my 55 from a 5 volt supply. The camera seems to follow the Garmin practise of needing a 17.3K ohm resistor between pins 4 & 5 of the micro USB connector to force into operational mode. Works a treat.
