I saw a thread on reddit where a user has been testing the Garmin Dash Cam 55 which is set to release next month. Has anyone here tested it and have any video samples or any other info on this model? Thanks!

Pretty good specs for $199 and well known brand.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/567282
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 5.62 cm x 4.05 cm x 3.53 cm
  • Weight: 59.5 g
  • GPS: yes
  • Screen: 2.0" LCD
  • Resolution 1440p
  • Frame rate: up to 60 FPS
  • Incident detection (G-Sensor): yes
  • Battery life: up to 30 minutes
Battery is a bummer but a good mount could make up for it.

can't say the mount looks ideal from the pics
Traditionally, Garmin mounts have been excellent. I'll reserve the judgement when it comes out.
This looks like the first Garmin dashcam worth trying.

It's got good competition from established cams at that price. Voice control is different, but more a gimmick than a feature IMHO :) "OK Garmin turn me on"

Wonder what sensor/SOC they are using. They mention 1440p 3.7M sensor...

It's also available in the UK via Amazon at £150.
The specs look good (except maybe for the battery rather than Capacitor), but on the face of it I'm impressed.
Also a Dashcam 45 with a 2.1MP sensor rather than 3.7MP of the 55.
Looking forward to a test review.

Does that orange ring on the lens glow in the dark?
:)
I'd be nervous about that ball socket mount.

No glowing :) Nothing a black Sharpie can't fix.
I didn't mount the adhesive disk to the windshield yet, but the mount and the ball socket feels very sturdy. The ball socket is the same design (but not size) as Garmin's GPS mounts.

It isn't important if your GPS jiggles and deflects a degree or two over rough roads and major bumps, but that is completely unacceptable with a dashcam :(
This is a different game requiring a different approach where no amount of movement in anything short of a collision can be tolerated throughout the cam's working life.

More than I can review. ;)
Hope the video quality is better than the Garmin GDR 33 I reviewed.

Lots of good info with internal photos here: https://fccid.io/IPH-A03110
Looks like a Garmin original with Ambarella A12A55 SOC and unknown image sensor.

Hey @Tobi@s wanna take a look at increasing bit rate for this one :)

Still working on samples, initial results reflect @Sunny experience - low bitrate :(
