Hi peeps,
I'm looking to get the gator
G4KDVR20
Please can someone tell me if this is a good one?
Thanks...

Ahar... That's what I wanted to know
What makes it not true 4k?

What is the flash gun on top for?

The rear camera isn't even FHD, in fact it is not included as standard!

Fake 4K cameras extrapolate the 4K footage, so what they do is take the footage from a 1080 or 1440p sensor and scale it up to 4 k resolution, so the output are actually 4K alright, its just not 4K with a lot of detail as its just a minor resolution blown up to 4K
For real 4K you need to have a 8 megapixel sensor or larger.
The extrapolating cameras often use a 4 megapixel sensor, but 4 megapixel are not 4K video

Nice one, thanks for the info my friend

****....I bought one just for 4k only to find out it's actually fake....no wonder the resolution spec was 2880x2160p24 although I guess it *is* technically UHD, just in a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9, and recordings didnt look quite crystal clear as is advertised on their website......reckon I should return it for a refund on the account of it being false advertisement and get a REAL 4k dashcam or too late?

Where does it state the sensor was 4MP? I was able capture images at 5164 pixels by 3872 pixels which is equivelent to a 20 Megapixel camera, so I don't know how the cam is fake if it can capture beyond 4k UHD resolution size....

The "flashgun on top" is apparently the GPS tracking thingie which is used to record your speedometer and direction of travel....or at least according to manual in my book....why does the rear cam need to be FHD and be included? As long as its crystal clear definition, good enough!

it's interpolated, it's not real 4k, chipset used does not support it

......soooooo those pixels are fake....? What's the real photo resolution size then...?

Yeah my left shoe would be on 4 mpix too.

I haven't looked but most likely they are using 4MP sensor, it's a very common setup for these
I still have the unit in front of me, what do you want me to do to check for proof its fake 4k uhd? If it means opening and cracking the case open then I probably wont be able to return them since you know, I opened the case up and probably damaging the casing....

I probably would need proof if they ask for some and doubting me returning it coz "change of mind" or "buyers regret" when it's meant to be "false/misleading advertisement".

chipset doesn't support 4k, even if they had an 8mp sensor it still wouldn't do 4k anyway, the resolution options are a giveaway also

to be fair the people that sell these would have no clue about real 4k versus interpolated 4k, if it says 4k on the box they'll think it's the same thing

ok so then whats my excuse when I go back to the store I bought it from? Do I just say "Oh this cam you sold to me is fake 4k uhd!" and hope they buy that excuse and refund me? I bought two by the way...wanted one for the front and another for the back.... $400 there.... I guess I got suckered into the shiny 4K UHD sticker on the box and demo cam display.........................................................

were you happy with the results, or you came looking because it didn't look right?

Save a frame using a good video player such as MPC or VLC, then use a photo editor to resize it from 4K to 2K resolution (2560x1440), then zoom in on both the original and resized images. If it is real 4K then the original will have more detail than the 2K version, anything up to 2x the detail, if it is fake then you will see as much detail in the 2K image as in the 4K image.

I actually came here because I was confused as to why 4k uhd = 2880x2160 instead of 3840x2160 when I took a look using media info tool. This was the only mention on this site of this specific unit and thats how I found you guys after some googling and then promptly signed up to input my comments of it.... So I guess it would kinda lean towards "it didnt look right" part. Here's a sample media info report in case you guys are curious:

And now I find that it's all false advertisement?!

Thanks I used MPC and then MS Paint to resize and opened with windows photo viewer. Hmmmm if anything, the resized copy from 2880x2160 to 2560x1440 actually looks clearer and more defined when zoomed it! Here's a couple of attachments to see what you think of it.

If you're happy with the results, then it doesn't matter if the cam lives up to it's 4K claims or not. If you're not happy with the results then try a return, but don't expect it to be easy and quick as they will probably want to see something visibly wrong with the cameras before approving the RMA.
