Until now only on korean dash cams I saw good lens module. But on korean dash cams I am not always happy with the quality of the encoder used in their chipsets used in the cameras.
So I think is possible better quality from chinese dashcams on Ambarella, Zoran, even on Novatek processors if they will use better lens module.
Because people are interested to see the car number plates, a good lens and bigger CMOS (1/2,7" is used by Itronics ITB-250HD) is the start to achieve this. Then is the processor.

I like to see some good lens which can be used in chinese dash cams.

You'll see more of that this year no doubt, I know from experience that a good lens and CMOS can make a lot of difference, new solutions coming with increased processing power will be able to take advantage of that also

Hopefully more manufacturers describe the components in their dash cams. Really only the processor is advertised today and sometimes the CMOS sensor (if it is Sony). No one ever talks about the lens.

I'm sure as people get more educated on the cams we will start seeing more info on these important components.

.

the manufacturer will gladly tell you what they use, most often people are dealing with resellers though who often don't know (maybe don't care) what's inside beyond the very basic things they know like which processor is used, some of them I expect don't talk too much about what they use as there are a lot of lower grade components in use which may even put buyers off the product, an awful lot are using the same solutions and really have nothing to separate them from their competitors either

This is because of "no name" products and the chaos from the chinese market which is full of fakes. There, too many people don't know what are selling, most of them are not smart enough to have a store. Or they just want to cheat some buyers with low quality products
But if you will make your "jokiin" camera you will always know what you have inside the camera.
For example if I am making a camera, for people which want more I can make the same camera but with Sony Exmor lens for example. Even that model will cost more with about 40% I can prove I can offer quality. And I am sure I will have clients for the Sony camera and all people will be satisfied even the ones which bought the cheaper version. The choice was in their hands (pokets).

But also DCM is right: until the buyers will become more educate, the only thing will sell the cameras is using some fantastic wide angle lens, some Ambarella chipset, some IR night vision even all these things are not the best.

it's unfortunate that the majority of buyers are still in the gimmick stage where things like wide angle, IR lights etc are what they look for, of course I know all the components inside our product but still to most consumers it is some other language that they don't understand, the ones that do know what it all means are still in the minority at this stage

Totally agree with the lens point, but as for the sensor size I would like to notice that "As sensor size increases, the depth of field will decrease for a given aperture"!

More explanation, please, with some example, if possible.
Thanks!

Depth of Field and Hyperfocal Focusing depends on the F (Focal length), f (aperture) and sensor size.

Hyperfocal Focusing for different sensor sizes, same frame coverage:
Let's look at the sensors 1/2.7'' and 2/3'', corresponding crop factors are 6.44 and 3.93, So lens focal lens multiplier is 6.44/3.93~= 1.64.
Same frame coverage (angle) that on the 2.8mm with 1/2.7'' will be lens with 2.8*1.64=4.59
Now let's assume that 4.59mm lets exists and check the Hyperfocal distance at http://www.outsight.com/hyperfocal.php#digital
With first example and lens 2.8mm f2.0, Focus at 2.8 feet for Depth of Field from 1.4 feet to infinity.
Second example with lens 4.59 f2.0, Focus at 4.5 feet for Depth of Field from 2.25 feet to infinity.
Therefore, if someone want to use Full Frame dslr as dash cam, it will be 2.8*6.44/1=18mm
Focus at 17.7 feet for Depth of Field from 8.85 feet to infinity.

In the examples for the 1/3'' - 2/3'' sensor sizes difference is not extreme, but for the same image quality I would prefer to use smaller sensor, but with the good lens on it.

Hi,
High quality dashcams using 6-7 glass lenses. This minimizes distortion caused by high / low temerature and glass lenses are more scratch resistant.

I agree wit "xor", regarding depht of field, focal lenght, aperture etc.

Sony Exmor is great, but more and more competition comes from OmniVision  OV2710  and Aptina AR0330.
There is a good article below ( use Google translator ).

http://trendvision.su/news/cmos-sensor/

This article explains that it is not always a rule: bigger cmos = better image quality!?
It also related to resolution, pixel size, noise, aperture, etc. There is a lot to say, but you will find all this info along with explenations in that article.

About aperture:

some interesting reading there, I don't think Sony has anything to fear from the OV2710 though, that's a very common entry level choice, not sure why they chose that for comparison

You are right "jokiin". Sony Exmor by its own is better than OV2710 or Aptina 0330. but, I ment to make a point about new chinese dascams lenses ( as per title ), that combination of good cmos, lens and CPU ( Ambarella A7, maybe Siri A9, A11 ), this all together will make a good competition to Korean dashcams that are using Sony Exmor, and of course for much lower price.

I wish Carl Zeiss optics would be used on dashcams, but it seems they have a long "marriage" deal with Logitec :)
