Got rear ended today (AGAIN!!!!)

My wife was sore for first two mornings after the accident but was OK yesterday morning (Friday). I guess if one is hit fairly hard, and we weren't, borderline at best, good to go to insurance even if the other guy says he will pay out of pocket. Not sure if one can afford to pay for physio or medical out of pocket.

Yesterday afternoon, we went to the collision centre for the Toyota dealership his son works at. They noticed damage the dealership we got our Rav from did not notice. Its expensive, and if it were me, I think I would want my insurance to pay for it. Some insurance companies here no rake hike insurance premium for first at fault accident.

I think vehicles I drive should have a big honking bulls eye on the bumper as yesterday evening (Tuesday), I got rear ended again! This time by a distracted driver. Perhaps even as a passenger I should have bulls eye on the rear bumper as a vehicle my father drove got rear ended on our way from church when I was 5. Over a decade later, I got rear ended in driving lessons when braking for a dog. Back then, the 80's, drivers actually looked where they are going, just some of them drove too close and did not give enough room for drivers that brake for dogs or children crossing the road. But in this decade, unlike the 80's, way too many don't practise common sense and don't "look where they are going". Looking at a rear camera, cropped - for a full three seconds she was moving forward without looking where she was going. Looking at the same cropped video, but in slow motion, it seems when her vehicle bounced off our vehicle, she hit us three additional times as she had her hands on her face in shock and I am guessing foot on the gas and not the brake. This after staring at something to her right hand stand, while moving

Like my 2015 accident, not going to rush to upload it youtube, if ever. But its open to debate. It clearly shows the dangers of distracted driving. Unlike 2015, I am getting the insurance involved. When I had an interesting conversation with the driver regarding her lack of my papers, my wife had already called the insurance company. A tow truck driver offered to take us to regional collision centre, but it was about 15 km and it was 8:40 and it closes at 9 and we had groceries. I have uploaded the videos to my box.net account and spoke to several insurance reps. We drove to collision reporting centre in a rental.

My wife had problems going upstairs this morning. We are going to get assessed. I have a little neck pain unlike 2015.

So on the return trip from Costco, with several frozen meals and items that needed refrigeration, we got off the highway a few exits earlier than we normally do on our way home to get a Little Caesar's pizza as we wanted something fairly fast. Approached a red light. We were the first car in that lane waiting. It was Red for about 16 seconds before we stopped. For the north bound lanes at the light, there were 3 straight lanes and one left hand turning lane. I was going to turn left later on, so I was on the lane next to the left lane. After waiting another 38 seconds, the adjacent lanes had red lights and I move a few feet anticipating a green light, but there was a left only signal, for the lane to my left, but also in the opposing direction. In Toronto, the dedicated left lanes don't always get activated on busy streets, but I was in Pickering. So I stopped after moving close to two feet, but was still behind the cross walk. The cars to my left were moving. Two seconds after I moved a foot, the car behind me crashed into my rear. It was so hard, I though she travelling for some distance and never noticed the red light and never stopped. I usually look at my rear mirror a fair bit when stopped, but I think the conversation with wife obstructed me from that practise.

As the car behinds me plows into us, I yell, we both scream about driver behind us, my wife then runs (Adrenalin) out to the car behind us (something not recommended). While my wife is gone and I am trying to collect my wits after being nailed, the car next to our right asks if we need a witness or ambulance. I mention about the camera, something I should have done and they move on. My wife mentions about camera, the driver admits fault and we go to a gas station at the intersection.

We take photos, a tow truck shows up. Tow truck driver says its debatable if my Rav can be driven, but the other car has damaged hood which may fly open.

Other driver doesn't have all of the necessary papers on her but some of them on her phone and we can follow her. We get her phone number and tell her to send photos. We leave the scene but become suspicious and go to the police which was just up the street.

The other party, sends her documentation but requests we NOT get insurance or the collision centre involved.

We go home and my wife calls the insurance before I can even look at the videos. We are told we don't need to go the collision reporting centre as someone will be towing our vehicle to a repair shop where an adjuster will look at. While on hold, I look at the rear video and become aware of things I didn't know at the time of the collision. Like instant replay. I look at the front and side and notice more stuff. We got hit so hard, the wipers got active. I have seen a few crash videos where that happens.

My wife and I suspected she was distracted. Not the clearest video I have shot of someones cabin ... there was late evening glare and I really should have cleaned my windows, but it was apparent she was distracted. Also she was stopped behind us. Got there 23 seconds after got the red light and 17 seconds before she nailed us. Seems she saw noticed the cars to the left moving or myself moving a little and she assumed she could move while looking down and to her right hand side. She moved a car length, and hit us never touching the brake. When she hit us, her right hand was on something other than the steering wheel and during the second hit, she moved her hand over her face. I thought she slammed from a greater distance and asked if she ever noticed the light was red for a considerable time when stopped.

So the late evening insurance person said we didn't need to take the car to collision centre as one of their adjusters will look at it. First call I get today is from someone telling me will be there in an hour to tow it. Second call is from the person who hits us to see how we were doing and if we going to the collision centre. I mention the CRC needs to get involved for repairs over $1000, she says $2000. Ours alone will be well above that and hers is going to be worse.

We had planned the day off, weeks ago and go to a med apt for her. We get a rental from insurance. Get a call from my dad on the way to a med appt that the rav was towed from the driveway. My wife, unable to answer the phone as she is getting her eyes examined, gets a call from a police officer, while I was at timmies speaking to an injury adjuster. Wife calls before I can finish my large double double and the call with agent. Injury adjustor calls when we are back in the rental and we make arrangements to see an injury specialist. I hear the msg from the police officer requesting we need to show up before the end of the day - WITH OUR VEHICLE which was towed hours ago.

Go to our other planned event, getting my passport as we are going to England soon. While waiting in line, we try to sort out the towed car and collision centre mess. The other insurance reps says the whole skipping the collision reporting centre thing was ill advised. Finally after, we get the police to allow an extension to our reporting period, the tow truck company arranges to have it delivered to CRC.

We do our report at the collision centre.

Hope all gets sorted - and that you enjoy your visit over here.

We don't have CRCs or papers over here, so if it happens again while here, it will be much easier to deal with!

(Driving licence might be useful, and maybe request a hire car with camera fitted.)

Hope that doesn't get too bad, surprising what 1 car length of acceleration can do if your not expecting anything.

My wife and myself will be visiting her relatives in London and a couple of days in Scotland. My wife has numerous relatives ... I won't be doing any driving.

The intention of CRCs are good. Drivers go to the collision centre instead of waiting for police to arrive. This frees up the police for other things. But unlike a police station, these things are not open 24 / 7. Also they are sparsely located. Toronto only has town of them and Durham region, where the accident took place, which much fewer people living there but four times the size in area, but only one CRC.

This morning no pain in the neck, it moved to my lower back. I thought I would be ok, but I have been assessed with whiplash. If I move my head in certain directions, I feel slight pain. My wife has it worse.

This weekend, I may upload the stills of my SUV.

Here an accident is nothing to do with the Police unless there is a serious injury or death, in which case you shouldn't move the cars since they will want to do a forensic investigation.

With regard to the whiplash, everyone should ensure that their headrests are correctly adjusted, doing so can avoid a lot of discomfort after minor accidents.
Not saying yours aren't, just that it is something we should all check occasionally but rarely gets mentioned.

Same here, and in that case the cars are probably so mangled up you cant move them.
But for a fender bender, you get your car off the road so traffic can pass, and then you exchange INFO and call whoever will move your car, if you feel any discomfort you request a ambulance.

Here in SC USA when you're involved in a crash you get the cars off the road if there's been no injuries, then you wait on the Cops to arrive. Within city limits their own Police usually do the investigation and report, arriving quickly- elsewhere it's usually the State Patrol and that might be well over a two-hour wait on Friday afternoon or whenever it's raining which is their busiest time

I've seen on many car-crash vids where inertial seat belts let people land on their heads or even become loose from the restraints after a car rolls over, sometimes with partial ejection of the person they were supposed to be protecting. I'm no fan of the things but I've got them as they've become common now. Neither do I like pre-tensioned ones as a small crash can lead to large avoidable repair costs and they do nothing for lesser jolts or impacts. I guess I'm part of a small minority who feels better when I'm more solidly strapped in all the time ;)

I have only lately started to use the seat belt, and only cuz the fines for not doing that have gone up significant.
In 20 years of driving without i have gotten 2 fines for that, in the same period i have gotten 7 parking fines for the exact same spot, and i still parked there just not between 15:30 and 16:00 where the parking guards came by that street.
And that 20 year period was when Denmark had a sort of adequate number of cops, ATM we only have about half of that number and 1/3 of what would actually be needed if you would try and stem up the moral decline in Danish society.

First time i got rear ended i did not have a seatbelt on as thoise was removed from my volvo 121 and so it in that old car was legal to not wear a seatbelt if it was not there, and the seats had no headrest and the Volvo got shunted from around 20 kmt to 80 kmh in a few feet, and that in turn also made the volvo feet shorter and the gas tank almost drag on the asphalt, and all guns in the boot was trashed ( but fortunate this was the one and only time that volvo was ever loaded with legal guns owned in legal by a passenger in the car )
So his trashed rifles and scopes was refunded by the other guys insurance of course.

No one of us 4 guys in the car got a wiplash, but the owner of the guns in the back seat did get a dent in the head, as for music we used a Walkman with a FM transmitter transmitting to a larger radio which he bumped his head on as it was lying in the back window.

4 guys ( of African / middle eastern heritage judging by CCTV footage ) jumped a kid here yesterday, sprayed him with tear gas stomped him and then stole his jacket that was in some trendy brand.
Fortunately there are okay CCTV footage, so thats nice.

Punk going down.

When I witnessed an automobile hit a cyclist 20 years ago, I waited for over an hour on the side of the road for the police to arrive. A cyclist, pedestrian being is hit is one of the exceptions to going to the CRC. The other being, injury or death, criminal activity - impaired/ stolen/ assault, Gov vehicle, dangerous goods, property such - private or municipal or highway. In this area, we have had accidents where there are secondary accidents due to stopped vehicles. They want to get vehicles off the road if possible.

My problems this incident
  • is the hours of the CRC,
  • Being informed by the insurance call centre person we did not need to go as insurance knows about - she was wrong
  • the lack of man power at the one i visited.

I have minor stiffness and soreness that insurance of that may require a little physio work. I have been hit in other rear in collision and never required it. However in 2015, my wife was complaining a few days after the accident. This is one reason she was calling insurance when I was trying to get the details of the other party.

I have given box.net links to my insurance and uploaded an three unlisted videos on youtube. I will make a few others and link on this forum when time permits.

For us, as she had her foot on the gas and not the brake it seems, she hit us four times. She would bounce off us and then hit again. That is visible when the video is in slo mo. It was like being a nail in a piece of wood.

There is an English entertainer that I follow got in a bad accident with A volvo. She swears by them. My wife's uncle, its the only car he will buy.

That could be what caused the whiplash, we are not designed like woodpeckers!
These things need plenty of time to get back to normal, just need a bit of patience.

Volvos have traditionally been about the safest cars, they invented the 3 point seatbelt and many other safety innovations. Not sure they are quite the same these days, since Chinese ownership, but then all cars have to be very safe these days to pass the NCAP safety tests.

You do not want to touch a cyclist with your car here in Denmark, thats most often you have to do drive and the theoretical driving test again.
Relating to new study released it seem like the Danes have not yet gotten used to ride or deal with E-bikes, accidents with those took a huge leap up last year comparing to 2012-13-14-15-16-17
AND ! most of those accident's have been woman at a +40 years age.
Okay the numbers of E-bikes also go up and up every year.

Kevin Magnussens qualifying crash in Canada yesterday was a 54 G event, he is racing now.

He was wearing a Hans device to prevent whiplash, problem solved.
Whereas when Daley Mathison crashed at the IOM TT last week, well death no 259 for the race.

amazing that the do gooders haven't killed the IOM TT off already
I should point out that number is just the contestants, doesn't include the marshals, spectators etc.!

But people know that it is dangerous when they go there, it's their choice, and since they are nearly all foreigners, the IOM doesn't have to pay the medical costs etc, instead it is a major source of income for the island, and since the island is an independent nation they can ignore any do gooders from elsewhere :)

have they ever had a year without a death?

have they ever had a year without a death?
Yes, very rare, but occasionally, I suspect it is largely dependent on the weather, this year was very poor weather so only 1 death due to lower speeds.

Number of contestants dead each year:

amazing

I remember hearing one of the more recent ones it was the third rider from the same family that had died doing the race, crazy stuff

They seem quite successful in having children before killing themselves - Darwin doesn't always work!

Some cyclist here have attached swimming pool floating devices as a physical barrier. I wonder if you tap their foamy would that count as a crash.
