No Aptina AR3135 sensor exists (neither Aptina.com has it, nor google knows about it)

Not sure about that. I am just a "messenger" forwarding information what on those websites. They both has stated Aptina 3135 ( not sure if it is AR, or just A series ? )

Looking at the form factor I think this is a truck dvr recorder or locomotive dvr recorder.

Yeahh, form factor design questions need to be asked from Taiwanese designers, not only HP, but most others as well: Mio, Vosonic, etc. Most major dash cam Taiwanese brands like this form factor.
From one hand it is actually very convenient to use, if hidden installation is not priority. Specs are very good on this dash cam.
For me of course priority is to hide dash cam and best style is horizontal type, not like this one here. But every buyer chose himself what style he likes.
