Legal to put black vinyl over windscreen dot-matrix area to shade dashcam?

On my 2008 sienna, I have a dashcam mounted on the dot-matrix area that is behind the rearview mirror. I want to keep the camera cooler so is it legal to do something to the dot-matrix area to make it opaque, like stick black vinyl cut to the exact same shape?
 
You'd have to check NY laws and DOT regulations to know for sure, but I'd guess that it won't be any problem to do what you describe.
