I upgraded firmware in my 9700 Duo Type B from 3.3 to 3.7.

Pros:
- It worked. I mean, I got it done very easily

Cons:
- Formatting microSD card was required and did not work right

Summary:
While the upgrade went smoothly in terms of the steps I made to do it, there was one glitch that I had to use a work-around to fix.

The problem:
The trouble was once the firmware was updated and the camera announced same, it prompted me to format the micro SD card. Fine, do it. Well, it formatted the card but got stuck in an endless loop. What I mean is that the format worked, the camera announced same, then returned to the Format microSD card screen where the only option was to press anywhere on the screen, which starts the reformat process. I even tried turning the camera off and rebooting it. Same issue.

The workaround:
I turned the camera off at the reformat prompt, removed the mircoSD card. Then I formatted the card in my computer (Mac using Disk Utility). I reinserted the microSD card into the camera, rebooted it and all was well.

So - I'm thinking this may be a 3.7 firmware bug. My microSD card is a SanDisk Ultra microSD XC1 - 128 GB

Jim

Are you certain you have 3.7 and not 3.3? The menu screen on my 9500 shows 3.3. The firmware files (original files on my device and also on the backup) and download after extracting shows the exact same files, same bytes, same, date, same properties. I never ran into the above issues, perhaps it's unique to the 9700? Incidently, I was never prompted to format. I did so any ways, as per instructions but via Lukas viewer.

Just curious, you have two SD cards, right? One MicroSD and regular? I imagine you left the SD in the camera and took the MicroSD to your Mac?

Just got an update from another Lukas distributor. There is a typo in the description. Our firmware is indeed 3.3 NOT 3.7.

Also, it is odd. My Luka didn't record anything past the two day mark. My memory card wasn't full or anything. A few days ago there was an "EVENT" where we went a little too fast over a speed bump and the event was activated. Nothing prior to that event was saved. I am testing the unit out and see if indeed if this is deliberate or the firmware for whatever reason deletes entire days and not just overwrites files.

I noticed that one of the OP's cons was that he had to format the card. It does say in the instructions to format both cards before proceeding to load the firmware. The firmware noted on the screen of my 9700 duo indicates it is 3.7 and not 3.3 as previously mentioned.
I also want to mention that before loading the new firmware the box did set off the events continuously every time I hit a bump. I had already changed the sensor setting to "1" which helped but didn't correct. The new firmware when installed did correct this problem. The new firmware also corrected my gps and speed was indicated on screen which I thought was a plus. Any how I love this black box and worth every penny.

@whoknows Interesting. Lukas Sinagpore (they're the only ones who replied to my question) wrote back that there is indeed a bug in the naming of the firmware for the [9500]. As I mentioned above, the data file properties in the downloaded files (once extracted) is exactly the same as what I already have in my camera. This means that when I had the camera installed at the shop, they already updated the firmware. I guess in whoknows' case with the 9700, the firmware number shows up correctly.

I also discovered that I can format both SD cards in the device without losing my configuration settings. With my 9500, I never had any issues with gps or incorrect speed. The car has a digital speedometer and it matches the gps speed on the 9500.

Well, I managed to update to the latest 3.9 version. However, not without any casualties.

I went to eject the microSD card and the spring was very very strong. It ejected like a rocket and ricocheted against the side pillar in the car, and then deflected into the side A/C vent with absolutely no hope of removal.

In my case, I backed up the config file. I had an extra microSD. I formatted that with the latest Lukas viewer. I then copied the firmware files onto the microSD. Unfortunately, when I performed the boot up procedure to update the firmware, it did not work. I tried a few times.

What did work was copying the firmware onto the large SD card. The microSD is only for storage of the recorded media. Otherwise, the microSD works fine.

1. Download the attached firmware file.

2. Back up important data then format the SD card [no mention if it is microSD or regular SD] through Lukas viewer.

(Those who use 64/128GB memory cards, format through Lukas viewer or dash cam device)

3. Copy and paste unzipped 3 download files (firmware, ubifs and Lukas_Manual_9700_9500) into the SD card.

4. Start a car engine. (To prevent power cut-off while updating)

5. Connect power then turn on the dash cam.

6. LED on the left bottom of the dash cam blinks and update starts. (takes about 4 minutes)

7. The update is complete.

(Normal operation starts after formatting from the device. In case of ‘memory allocation 64KB on Windows 7’ excepted)

Updated the camera in the car this morning to firmware 5.3.1 it took around 4 mins as suggested by lukas and kept all my setting preferences , I must be doing something right for a change....Out shopping this afternoon so will check all is ok I was having a problem with playback in the viewer the playback is jumpy and sticks ......Lukas have video footage samples and are working on it....Not sure if the latest firmware solves the problem but time will tell. I already have the viewer 1.2.9.0 installed ......Ipol........next camera to try will be a panorama from Niko hopefully the X1 will be on sale in two to three months, for the moment I have the lukas duo and lukas ace models running side by side so there is no rush.....

Perhaps someone can contact Lukas again...they obviously don't like talking to me. lol

Thanks again fellows for all the help and updates. I will say I must be one of the lucky ones as I've never had a problem before or after any updates. I'm quite happy with the 9700 duo b and would recommend to any one. I see there is a new 9750 out which I may or may not purchase depending on whether I got a good price for mine and the new one was updated enough to make it worth my while. Thanks again google and idol. you're the best
