Amazon has many mini0801s. I've had one of the originals, from e-prance for a long time. I like it. Want more. So, even e-prance has listing for what APPEARS to be mini0801s. But I'm so confused. $35 http://tinyurl.com/lzxu5a2

Which, if any, work? By that I mean,
1. record video correctly
2. record GPS data correctly, with proper optional mount
3. are compatible with the Mac OS X application Dashcam Viewer (Very important to me)

I know, it's a crap shoot, and buy one and see. But any rule of thumbs here? Not sure WHAT is compelling about the 0803 and other 'upgraded' models, either.

Tbh I can't recommend 0801/0803.
Also I don't think that the 0805 release fixed many problems. 0806 seems better - but I can't say anything about it.

As jokiin already said, the first link is to a fake Mini 0801, aka GS608.
I used it as a guinea pig to test my DIY magnetic mount.
It's not a quality item, so don't waste your money, I bought one for about £12 IIRC, and even that was too much in my opinion, but I knew why and for what purpose I was getting it.
I have now installed a genuine 0801 as a rear dashcam and it works fine - no errors, problems etc. Just works :) Of course, it is rather outdated by todays standards, but as a rear cam it suits me fine.

Specification sheet for comparison between models at bottom of this page: http://mini0806.com/spec.html

Not sure it helps much, but the 0806 will give the best image quality and the 0803 is now obsolete.

so, those knock-offs won't work, is the going opinion?

I have and have been pleased with the 0801 from e-prance. Some issues with mount at first, documented in these forums. but it's been rock solid since.

I like the higher capacity storage. SDXC, I am assuming, with the 0806.

I gave up on these after two went belly-up. Getting customer service from China is too much of a hassle and I like to keep my money here in the USA if possible. I bought a Panorama 2S on Amazon and I'll never use any other. The customer service is beyond reproach. The owner, Jon, answered the phone when I had a problem. He quickly diagnosed the problem and I was on my road trip. On my return he replaced it for a new one. Problem was the screen wasn't showing what the camera was recording, however it was recording, so it was good for the trip. That was August of 2014 and I have had ZERO problems with it.
My review on Amazon is under the name "Rifleman" if you want to see it. Where I live in Louisiana it is very, and I do mean VERY, hot and humid. This just destroys batteries in those types of cameras. The Panorama 2S has no battery, but relies on a capacitor for the power to shut it down correctly, other wise it will lose the video it's trying to save to the file. Once a battery gets hot enough it craps out. One of the o801's split the case open when the battery popped. Not a good thing to happen, lol.

One of the best replies, ever.

So, is "Jon" from Pier 28 (seller)?

Just to make sure...

Yes. I did receive an Email saying the name company name had changed or something to that effect, and the new one was Pier28. I do not know more than that, such as, if he sold it or renamed it. Jon did tell me on the phone that the Panorama had a fail rate of less than 1%, and I know I'll never buy anything but quality. If you pay too little and don't get what you need, you lose money and time and don't have what you wanted in the first place. If you pay too much and get what you need, then you are out a little money, but don't have to buy it again(...and again in my case). When I build a rifle or pistol and look for a bargain. I get the very best and only have to do the build once.
