This was a first for me so here it goes my Initial review of the new 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which comes with a series of important updates such as a bigger 2.4 liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine that provides better efficiency and more power, upgraded and more powerful front and rear motors, increased capacity drive battery, sport mode and updated S-AWC 4WD system.

Petrol engine Inline 4-cylinder 16V MIVEC Atkinson cycle
Engine capacity 2,360cc (Bore/Stroke 88x97mm) Compression Ratio 12.0:1
Maximum output 135hp @ 4,500 rpm / 211Nm @ 4,500rpm
Petrol storage 45 litres
Electric powertrain Dual electric motor – one per front and rear axle
Maximum output Front: 82hp/137 Nm Rear: 95hp/195 Nm
Battery storage 300V Lithium ion battery pack, 13.8 kWh capacity
Charging AC 230V 16A: 4.0 hours / CHAdeMO ~80% in 25 minutes
Top speed 106mph / 170 km/h (where permitted)
Top EV speed 84mph / 135km/h (where permitted)
0-62mph 10.5 seconds
25–37mph 2.5 seconds (40-60km/h)
50-62mph 3.7 seconds (50-100km/h)
EV Range (miles) 28 (WLTP) / 33 (NEDC)

I have worked for a Mitsubishi / Saab dealer, but i had to leave as the guy was not a honorable guy, and i am big on myself and people keeping their word.
Which i assume is also why i have such a very hard time dealing with politicians.

So any dirt secrets about the PHEV? :D
A lot of pople are claming poor programing of the BMS unit that will report battery capacity wrong and decrease EV range.

I wouldn't know, this was years ago around year 2000

Very poor acceleration. I know, that the total output is not sum of outputs of all motors, but this result is very weak.

Does seem rather poor for a 2,360cc engine, even without the electric motors adding power!

But these hybrid vehicles are heavy, so they don't accelerate or corner well - you need to compare it with other hybrids, or with a diesel since it is an Atkinson engine!

And don't expect it to save you much fuel over a conventional petrol either, unless you only use it in electric mode for short commutes - "EV Range (miles) 28" being careful not to accelerate hard enough to trigger the petrol engine, once you run out of battery power it's going to use as much fuel as a V6 petrol but without the performance.

I got some stats in so it goes as this:

0-100km/h ~ 10seconds, faster than my previous 177hp diesel.
550km trip with no battery charge = 6.68 liters/100km average, the same trip with the diesel = 8.5 liters / 100km

Max power is 177-230hp, 177 is under 0-60km/h where only the electrics are used (and series-hybrid), then it will switch to parallel hybrid and will actually have 230hp and that is the thermal engine - direct drive + generator + rear motor.

PS: my older car was also a Mitsubishi Outlander, 2012 / 4N14 engine, 177hp. Being an SUV fuel efficiency was not great but i needed the 4WD drive and the large boot space.

PS2: For now the hybrid version:
- less fuel consumption
- no nasty DPF regeneration
- much more less engine noise
- more usable power when accelerating (for overtakes)
- no 6 speed manual gearbox, (nor a CVT, nor automatic) - huge comfort increase
- no turbo lag

So overall I'm happy with it!

PS3: on "SPORT" mode it's faster and more responsive than my old 210hp V6 Cosworth Ford, while still doing ~ half the fuel consumption ;)

Morning traffic rush @ crawl speed, really good if I could say that as my diesel would do 10+
