Review - Vantrue E360 Ace & LT01 - 360° Dashcam & 4G LTE Module

Vantrue invited me to test their new E360 dashcam, complete with the 4G LTE module which has just been enabled here in the UK. It arrived just before New Year's Eve, so I've had about 3 weeks getting to know its features, performing a range of tests and recording sample footage for evaluation.

The E360 appealed to me with the prospect of all-round coverage from a single camera. My old car had a conventional 2CH front+rear dashcam setup, plus side-facing cameras mounted on fixed side windows. My new car does not have any side windows suitable for mounting a dashcam so I have been without side-facing cameras for a few months. Is the E360 a do-it-all dashcam, or will I continue using separate cameras for the front and back, and keep looking for a way to add left & right coverage?

The E360 is a 360° dashcam that features a pair of Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 image sensors and a pair of ultra-wide fisheye lenses that face front and back from the square-shaped body. Each lens captures slightly more than 180° in a horizontal plane, and when stitched together they provide complete coverage all around the camera. The stitching is done in-camera to generate a 5.2K panoramic video (5184x1944 pixels). The E360 can also record in other video formats, including fisheye views and separate front and cabin videos at resolutions up to 1440P - more on these later.

The E360 clicks into a GPS mount which in turn slides into an adhesive base. The ball socket in the mount permits a range of vertical angle adjustment, in addition to left and right. This is useful when fine-tuning the camera orientation to achieve the best front, cabin and combined 360° views. There is no tension adjustment in the mount, however it feels secure and in testing so far it has shown only a small amount of vibration. Hopefully this continues through long-term testing and hot weather.

Although there is some vertical angle adjustment in the mount, I found that I needed to aim the camera as far down as it would go to aim the lenses horizontally. E360 owners with a shallower screen angle may find this to be a problem, resulting in more sky than ground and a warped horizon.

The E360 is powered via the GPS mount which has a USB-C port on one side. The E360 supports an additional rear camera - this is connected directly to a USB-C port on the top of the camera body rather than the GPS mount. This arrangement is OK if you do not intend to remove the E360 often, but does leave a cable hanging loose which might be an issue for some people.

The Vantrue LT01 is a 4G LTE module that provides cloud services to the E360 (and other supported Vantrue models) in some countries - check yours is supported before buying. The customer needs to provide their own 4G SIM card and a data package. At present there is no cost to use the Vantrue cloud features. (I intend to write more about the 4G LTE features in a separate post later in this thread)

The LT01 requires a wired connection to the dashcam:
- The dashcam power cable is plugged into the LT01
- A captive 50cm long USB-C cable runs from the LT01 to the dashcam, providing data and passing through the power supply. The short cable may limit placement of one or both devices on the screen depending on the car geometry. In my car I have the E360 to the right of the rear view mirror and the LT01 on the left side of the mirror so it is not a problem for me.

Vantrue sent me the E360 Ace package which includes a rear camera and a handheld mount, plus a hardwire kit and a 512GB microSD card.

The handheld mount screws into the top of the E360 and connects to it via the same set of pins as the GPS mount. The handheld mount contains a pair of 18650 batteries that power the camera (there is no battery inside the E360).

The mount can then be attached to the supplied mini tripod, or to any other suitable attachment point with a standard 1/4" screw thread. In later testing, I intend to use the E360 mounted on a full-size photo tripod to bring the camera view up to eye level.

When mounted (upside down) on the handheld mount the E360 doubles up as a 360° semi-action camera, however it is not intended to compete against a dedicated 360° action camera such as the Insta360 or GoPro MAX. The E360 is not waterproof, does not have an internal battery, and does not have image stabilisation, so you can't use it on your ski helmet or attached to a bicycle. However it does work fairly well with steady hand movement, and it's better when mounted on a fixed support. I may use it for occasional short video clips to document my photography trips.

E360 Video Resolution Options

The E360 has a number of resolution options which change how the 360° video is presented:

5.2K Panorama (5184x1944)
Both 180° videos are stretched to fit a rectangular 4x3 aspect ratio, then stitched to create an 8x3 panorama.
The merge includes exposure adjustment of both videos, probably to achieve a less visible stitch. The result is a darker interior and brighter exterior than the separate videos (compare to examples below)

Dual Fisheye 1944P (5184x1944)
Both original 180° fisheye videos are displayed side-by-side in a single 8x3 panoramic video. These appear to be the full-frame 2592x1944 videos captured by the IMX675 sensors.
The lens projects an image circle over the 4:3 ratio sensor which crops the top and bottom edge. No dewarping or exposure adjustment here.

1440P + 1440P (2560x1440 + 2560x1440)
Similar to 1944P+1944P above, but cropped from 4:3 down to a 16:9 aspect ratio and removing some of the unnecessary sky and dashboard at the top and bottom of the view.
Comparing the left and right edges of 1440+1440 to 1944+1944, the coverage appears to be slightly wider at 1440P.
This is my preferred resolution option on the E360.

E360 Power Consumption and Bitrate Testing

I measured the power consumption for every available driving and parking mode resolution in both 2CH and 3CH configuration, and recorded the bitrate of each file saved during that test.

My test setup comprised:
- Programmable DC power supply
- Vantrue VP01(II) USB-C hardwire kit
- Kowsi inline USB-C power meter
- E360 with GPS mount (screen off, IR LEDs off, WiFi off)
- 2CH (front & cabin cameras) / 3CH (front, cabin & rear cameras)
- There is no bitrate or quality setting for the E360

The Kowsi power meter does not calculate an average power draw, so I manually noted the total power consumed over a 5 minute period and used that to calculate the average power draw for each mode.
For the collision and motion detection parking modes that only record for a short duration, I estimated the average watts by watching the Kowsi display for 30 seconds
The power draw in 'power saving collision detection' mode was so low that even a 5-minute average seemed inaccurate, so I rounded off the power to 0.1W

General Observations
- The 5.2K Panoramic mode consumes slightly more power than most of the other resolution options, and records at slightly less bitrate
- 2CH mode runs at a total bitrate of about 30Mbps across all resolution options
- 3CH mode runs at a total bitrate of about 45Mbps across all resolution options
- The exception is 2CH 1440P 60fps which runs at almost 30+30=60Mbps, and with the highest 2CH power consumption. There is no 3CH 60fps option.

Parking Mode Observations
- Collision detection consumes very little power (~0.1W) in "power saving" mode, however it takes 17 seconds to wake up and start recording after the impact is detected
- Collision detection consumes 1.2W in "quick start" mode, however it still stakes approximately 5 seconds to wake up and start recording after the impact is detected
- Motion detection consumes the most power, although it does record at full 30fps and at the same bitrate as driving video
- Low bitrate consumes the least power whilst recording. The frame rate drops to 15fps in addition to the reduced bitrate.
- Collision detection, motion detection and time lapse all record in 5.2K Panoramic mode. This resolution is fixed, no matter what the chosen resolution for driving mode.
- Low bitrate records in either 1080P or 720P (same for each channel). Again this is fixed, no matter what the chosen resolution for driving mode.
- The manual states that collision detection records for 60 seconds. In my testing it always recorded for 30 seconds.
- Motion detection reliably recorded a buffer of 10 seconds before motion was detected
- Even with continuous power on the ACC line, the E360 goes into parking mode if the camera senses no movement for 5 minutes. I encountered this frequently when measuring the power consumed over a 5-minute period, and I have experienced this when stuck in traffic.

Further Test Options
- I intend to test power consumption with the E360 and the 4G LTE module, particularly to see what effect cloud connection has in parking mode
- I do not plan to test the E360 in single channel mode. I doubt many people would be interested in this?

Does anyone know if the Vantrue LT01 module works with 3 network sims , I'm getting 2 green lights but failing on activation

Yeah I updated the firmware yesterday, but have noticed today that the 3 network is limited probably due to the storm
 
SIM cards can default be set to enter PIN code on boot, so you have to put the SIM in a phone and disable that feature there CUZ otherwise the SIM will ask for a PIN code every time you try to use it / start the car in the case of a dashcam modem.
At least that was what made my install of 70mai 4G kit go past the last item in the parring that it failed all the time.

The reflections are way better than I expected, and of course a polarizer filter is not possible.

I parked with my back to the sun for recording those resolution comparisons, so there's not much reflection to see.

I have some driving comparisons to post very soon, recorded at the same time in bright, low winter sun. These will be better for evaluating reflections.
