S1 Pro Max Review

More nighttime footage this time on the highway.
Motion blur is evident on the oncoming truck plate with both cameras but the plate traveling in the same direction is clear on the S1 Pro Max. (4K vs 2K camera)
The Viofo still has no GPS lock

A229 Plus HDR ON (Still no GPS lock)

Again the S1 pro Max performance looks better (4K vs 2K camera).
Noteworthy is the white car on the right blew past me at a high rate of speed but the plate is readable with the S1 PRO MAX.

I tested platepix in the early evening, and the image was SUPER DARK. Similar to your last photo.

PlatePix seems to help with reading plates at night at the expense of a generally darker image with reduced detail in the darker areas.
I'm going to try to get the exact same video footage in different lighting conditions with PlatePix ON and OFF
I'm curious exactly what are the differences when PlatePix is turned on in an "apples to apples" comparison.

I am too. Does PlatePix + HDR output clearer license plates? Or is HDR without Platepix sufficient on its own?

Ty to the person posting the pics. Unfortunately it’s a pretty unfair comparison between VT’s newest camera and Viofo’s a229 (released in Sept ‘23 I believe). I wonder what the newest Viofo model (especially the a329T version) could do against the S1 Pro Max. Though the Viofo model is $100 more…

From my experience Viofo will beat the Vantrue when it comes to plate capture. I had compared the A329 to the E1 Pro.
The Vantrue will have nicer colors but a little less performance with plate capture.
Either unit has a great image.
But for the price point the Vantrue performs good!

Each of the S1 Pro Max's cameras run at 2160p (4K). The image is very crisp, albeit darker. You can see noticeable clarity differences between the 4k S1 Pro Max and the N4S.

I'm posting the same footage WITH and WITHOUT PlatePix enabled to show an apples to apples comparison. I wanted to see how PlatePix impacts the same image under similar lighting conditions.
PlatePix is mostly meant to obtain accurate reading of license plates in various lighting conditions but since it's pretty impossible to get the same cars in the same spot, I'm using signs as a comparison.
I can definitely tell when PlatePix is enabled even without seeing the "PlatePix" stamp. The overall image has deeper blacks and some of the detail gets blurred in the very dark areas.
In general, under normal lighting conditions with this small sample size, the signs are a little easier to read with PlatePix at the expense of losing detail in darker areas of the image.

N4S PlatePix OFF ------ I can read the smaller "Cedardale" sign on the left a little better WITH PlatePix enabled.

N4S PlatePix OFF ------ In this case I think PlatePix made the "Osgood" sign on the right a bit easier to read since the letters are more "contrasty" but both Images are legible. PlatePix makes the letters look less natural, kind of blotchy but darker

N4S PlatePix OFF ------ The "Willow Ave" sign on the right is easier to read WITHOUT PlatePix. So I cannot conclude that under all conditions, PlatePix is favorable. The larger white sign below it is better WITH PlatePix.

I noticed the same. PlatePix makes the image overly dark and the surrounding view far less visible.
