Settings in USB connected mode

When I have the camera attached to PC and is in USB connected mode, can I edit the settings on the camera?
 
You used to be able to, but since the last few firmware updates you now cannot access the menu when connected to a computer. Quite annoying really.
 
running the camera has the potential to use more power than many USB ports can supply so I'd think there's probably good reasons why they've changed that
