given how vehicle security systems these days have become so tightly integrated into the vehicles computer it's the low tech method that any thief can work out

It sounds like the thing to do is leave some old car keys to a vehicle you no longer own hanging from a prominent hook in your house outfoxing the low tech thief with low tech subterfuge. :D

Recently I have seen on the news where several people break into car dealerships, then steal the keys and drive cars away. Sometimes we forget that the basics work better than trying to outsmart everyone.

That would work, after all some employ dummy cameras :D

Being a "camera guy" I've never quite gotten the dummy camera thing but I see how it would work in some situations. Then again, a friend of mine has one in a record store he owns and I keep trying to convince him he needs a real one.

the stats were collected from shopping center thefts

This is how insurance companies think they can justify fees and why I don't have comprehensive insurance and never park close to careless shiv rivettes who don't care less.

Humans are so lazy when parking and in disabled zones which shivs me no end and Im not even disabled.

Rubbish............. Unless your in the know.
Yes, believe it or not there are still some really good people in that business but they are few. The same as with hiring any specialist, those who do no research until they have need will probably only find the bad parts of those businesses. The ones who seek out info ahead of time will learn who to use and more importantly who to avoid ;)

Car theft has changed over the recent years, as many cars now have electronic security in the key so that breaking or picking the ignition switch will still not make the car go :p Pro thieves have equipment to get around most of that but most cars aren't taken by 'pros'. The new 'norm' in many places is the 'snatch' wrecker. One of these with either no signage or with fake magnetic signs grabs the car as if it was being repossessed for non-payment on a loan.
that's why I have a GPS system in mine so I know where it is at all times.

he probably has given into the reality that today's thieves download their music

Not so in this case.

He sells vintage vinyl, 33's, 45's, 78's, all kinds of highly collectible older recordings including even Edison wax cylinders, sheet music and rare music memorabilia. Very little of what he sells is available to download and what he has that is, is valuable because of its provenance. He even has an ever growing collection of brand new in the package and slightly used 8 track tapes and players that he adds to whenever he finds a supply. I wondered what that was all about and learned that there is a very hot market for pristine vintage 8 track tapes among car restoration enthusiasts.

yeah having some sort of hit artist of the time in the 8 track player on a resto is something I've seen a few times now

Yup, I've read about putting them in the freezer and what not..

Yeah, with 8 tracks as with any other type of vintage recordings some artists and "pressings" are worth more than others.

I'm permanently stupid about certain matters
