The future direction of dash cams?

Antenna = Tracking. I prefer stand alone systems. As OnStar and Google have proven, tracking happens beyond our control. I'm not looking for another "connected" system. I prefer the K.I.S.S. rule.

I agree. I think people are looking for way to high tech connected integrated solutions.
Out side of maybe a stand alone box that houses the recording and a separate camera I really think people are taking a simple idea and trying to over complicate it or ask for way to much.

Exactly. What's next, some audio prompts in a sexy voice  When it starts maybe "Recording just for you, Big Boy" When you touch the buttons, she says "ooh!" at the end of the journey she can say "oh that was amazing!" :D Otherwise simple :p Of course a switch for "Married mode"
@jokiin you could revolutionize the dash camera!

something like this could possibly support the DVR functionality needed, I don't think that's what they really intend though

Exactly. The in-dash unit would allow playback and provide other user functionality like file transfer. If the car was equipped with an alarm system (triggered by motion detection from the camera) it could alert the owner in real time. Lots of possibilities...

The possibilities are there, not sure its in their product roadmap though, seems more about entertainment than anything else

I believe their "roadmap" is to develop a scalable and flexible articheture that would enable 3rd party manufacturers to integrate various products. I also believe Parrot has the capability to do many things that might have seemed impossible just a short time ago. Think outside the box!

good ideas that you've mentioned, not sure it's how they're thinking though, I could see a DVR interfacing with this before I could see one being integrated, depends what sort of uptake it has whether or not it would be commercially viable to develop something as a 3rd party

In 2004 I went to DV Expo and saw the Sony low end professional HD camera that did 1920x108/60i for around $6,000 USA. As I recall the consumer version with less features was around $2,000 USA. Jump forward 10 years to today and we see that Sony has introduced a 4K (3840h x 2160v) consumer camera for $2,000. I predict that in 10 years or less we'll see 4K (3840h x 2160v) dash cams with better low light capability than what we have today.

H265 compression is the replacement for H264 and it seems that every 10 years we see a major improvement in video compression. I'm sure that in in few years we'll all be talking about H265 compression and who knows, maybe in 10 years we'll be looking at H266 compression.

Moore's Law is still going to have an impact on the size of memory cards. However there there are limits and the date 2020 is suggested as when it no longer becomes practical. Assuming it takes 2 years to double, we should still see an 8x increase in memories. So today's low end 8GB will be the 64GB low end and the 128GB high end will become the 1TB high end.

certainly less ;)
6 years on and we have that 4K dashcam, we have the H265, we have the 1TB high end memory card - you were correct :)

(Thanks to the spammer for digging the old thread up, was an interesting read!)
