Vantrue E1 Pro Starvis 2 IMX678 PlatePix & HDR / The best 4k single channel camera in 2025?

PlatePix was turned off so no algorithm. There’s some compression when taking a screenshot on my phone which is why the non-zoomed in photos don’t look as good.

-Original files were transferred to my iPhone directly from the SD using an adapter
-Default video player opened it
-Video was paused when noticing the plate was a far distance and a screenshot was taken
-The paused video would be zoomed in (not the screenshot)
Will be interesting to see as imx678 is such a mature product at this stage, that it's not that bad an idea to fit it in such a small body as the E1 Pro.

I would presume quite highly that the E1 Pro will be one of the last products that will be at 4k30 and not 4k60 as most other competitors have already transitioned to the newer NT98530 chipset to enable WiFi 6 and 4k60.

The PlatePix feature/algorithm seems to work well in the zoomed in view! I’m most interested to see this myself. Other images and video look great so far. I’m also fond of the small footprint of the camera itself, seems to fit right next to your mirror without being too obtrusive.
From my testing on the Nexus 4 Pro when PlatePix was first released last year, in the screenshots below. There was an update after this to tidy things up a bit, but the general principle was the same where the contrast was affected and sharpness too.

Overall, PlatePix does a decent job and makes the resulting picture more aesthetically pleasing

It appears that there is some rattling. Is this caused by the camera or by something close to it?

It’s because the camera touches my rear view mirror and the mirror is loose. I just tried rattling the mirror to confirm the issue is from my side of things. not surprising after 250,000km..

I don’t think it’ll be an issue for others.

So if anyone else is installing one, maybe leave a few millimeters of space unlike me:

Hopefully the firmware update helps things because the jumps shouldn't be happening at all, with any dashcam, it's a big no no.

Starvis 2 should pick up those plates pretty easily so good to see it's covering the basics well like it should be. PlatePix should help a bit in making these plates clearer, but in my initial assistance in fine tuning this last year for Vantrue, it's more a contrast thing from the outset. It does help but not miles better.

If they can fix the dropped / duplicated frames, then they're onto another solid offering.
The jumps seem to be less noticeable with the latest firmware but they’re still there

I never realized they’re a nono for dashcams as I’ve seen the same thing on my eufy (Anker) 4K “professional” security camera

Sample after applying the update:

Thanks for the clarification.
Just wanted to make sure if it's caused by the camera or not.

A little bit of space cant hurt in this case.

I just took a look at the video and as you said it still happens.

Ideally a firmware update is able to fix this behaviour.

What SD card are you using? A Vantrue one?

Vantrue’s high endurance SD was used up until the latest video

I wanted to see if my 512GB Adata Premier Pro (MLC card) would solve it but guess not.

Thanks for the clarification.

There’s an extra 3M VHB sticky pad in the box to reposition the camera but I’m going to try and tighten the rear view mirror first as it is a pain to remove the old glue.

The rattle isn’t as bad in the last video so I have hope 🙂

Ended up ordering a second unit, fully paid out of pocket for the rear window.

Instead of adding more security cameras to the property, I prefer having two of these running 24/7. There’s enough chaos in the world and I’m not interested in adding any to the neighborhood.

No one has to feel like they’re being watched and the fact that I have to go to the car to pull the footage is a pro in my mind.

I have not been a fan of modern day security cameras with their privacy issues and constant notifications.

Sample image from this evening:

At least with my own eyes, it’s pitch black outside..

That's an impressive image for a pitch black scene at night! I've been thinking about similar uses recently, the power draw is so small and the recordings are pretty high resolution...

Nice, if it works for you as an alternative solution then awesome!

Disclaimer: the unit is provided by Vantrue

I don't think I am going to create a new thread for it.. but here are some unboxing photos + a sample video after installing it today. I think for my car, I might need the CPL to reduce the reflection of the center speaker grill. The mount is similar to the E2 and E3 I had previously.

I did notice that it had issues with the OBD2 hardwire kit before the update, but seems to have fixed after installing latest firmware. The issue was that it goes into parking mode while I was driving and car voltage was still above 12.4v or whatever limit I set it to cutoff at; but update seemed to have solved it.

Holy moly those plates are clear.

Pretty nice video quality. Plates are nicely visible.
Your video does seem to have several small jumps here and there as well.
Did the firmware update change anything about this for you?

I didn't really test with original firmware as after updating I formatted the memory card.

I believe my settings are on high bitrate (not max), using a Vantrue 64gb memory card. Maybe it'll improve in future updates, but overall quality of the video seems pretty good.

I can't find any info online about the E1 Pro. Is it compatible with the LTE box?
