Vantrue Pilot 2 Thermal Camera unboxing and review

Hi guys, @Hack_man @EricSan @jsmith

I’d like to confirm whether the alarm never triggers at all, or if it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.

If it never triggers, please restore the device to factory settings and then set it up again.

There is also a new firmware available — please perform an OTA update first, then restore to factory settings and try again.

This file is a bit too large for me to send directly. I’ve tried uploading it to Google Drive, please click the link to check it out. If there’s a better way to share it, let me know so I can use that next time.

PS: If you still have any issues, make sure to @ me so I can jump in directly and help solve it!

@Jeff_Vantrue true The Alarm triggers with following distance of cars and randomly at other objects. So the thermal camera itself is "working". I can try an OTA update and see if that changes anything.

Yes, my firmware is out of date: I'll update the unit.

Here are the settings I had with the pedestrian video:

New Updated Firmware. Same Settings. 32 MPH / 52KM/H. Fox ran in front of my car today. Still no Alert. Maybe it was too far away and the system didn't deem it a threat?? No Idea the parameters, but not having much luck.

Here's the snapshot from the front camera. Not the greatest at night with a lot of glare, but clearly you can see the Fox itself.

Hi, the fox is too far away, so the distance in the image makes it difficult to recognize. It needs to be closer to have a chance of being detected.

Currently, there is no specific recognition data for foxes. If it is detected, it will be recognized based on the form of a small dog.

@Jeff_Vantrue

Isn't purpose for camera to recognize fox as "Dog" and to warn from far distance to allow braking? The Thermal Camera clearly saw shape run across the screen? Or does it have to be a clear visible shape before Thermal Camera Triggers?

Hi, sir
Regarding this issue, here is the reply from our R&D team:

It is not necessary for the object trajectory to be clearly visible in order to trigger detection. You can check whether an object has been recognized by looking at the detection boxes displayed on the screen.

The current algorithm is designed as a balanced middle ground. If the shape requirements are set too high, many objects cannot be recognized; if they are set too low, there will be too many false detections.

Whether an alert is triggered also depends on the sensitivity setting. If the sensitivity has already been set to High and it still does not trigger, the possible reasons are:
  1. The distance is too far, and the thermal imaging lens did not detect the object.
  2. The thermal imaging lens did detect the object, but the distance is still too far to reach the trigger threshold of the highest sensitivity. This trigger threshold is dynamic and is related to the current vehicle speed, the distance between the vehicle and the object, and other conditions.
  3. The recognition algorithm is also related to the object’s movement speed and dwell time. If the object moves very quickly and disappears instantly, the algorithm may not have enough time to complete the calculation.

Please let us know if you need any further clarification. šŸ˜‰

I updated my P2 and actually got a few alerts the past days. Mostly pedestrians very close to the road. The P2 will mark the object in an orange box.
The box is normally green if it doesn't detect the object as critical.

Question:

I only recently got around to installing the thermal camera (had to relocate a few of my other dashcams)

I see them thermal tracking boxes on the screen in real time along with the object distance, but when I transfer the actual files to my tablet or laptop, it just plays the raw files (no green/red tracking boxes)

Even if I open the files on the Vantrue Viewer program (Windows), it still only shows the raw thermal file.

How do I get it to show the tracking boxes on the recorded files so I can edit the footage to show them?

Not supported. I inquired about that one originally and was told the hardware is incapable of handling that feature.

Hmm

Then what's the point of the distance meter if you can't keep an actual log of the events?

I have footage from earlier tonight where a man was walking towards me in the slow lane of the Belt Parkway as I was barrelling towards him at 50+mph.

The thermal picked up on him and if it wasn't for the visual alert, I probably wouldn't have seen him until it was too late.

Trying to render the footage now, but without the tracking data, it will look kinda plain jane when I upload it to YouTube

That was my complaint, too. However, wendy told me the hardware was incapable of generating the boxes on the video itself.

Here's a clip from last night

It's a shame we can't show the meta data for the thermal cam as it would actually go a long way for advertising the live tracking

No audible beep warning you though.

I'm still playing with the settings on the audio alerts as it can get quite annoying in NY traffic

In this instance though, the visual alert did go red for the walker (which is how I was able to spot him).

Same clip from my N5S

Do you mind posting a screenshot your speed settings. I would certainly appreciate it.
