VIOFO A139 Pro - Testing / Review Info

I received the two A139 Pro 3CH dash cameras that VIOFO stated they were sending to me. I have them configured and installed in my car. Of course the weather is switching back into a rainy pattern, so my day/night footage gathering may not take place for several days. We need the rain, but its timing is unfortunate (for me).

Rain is indeed a buzz kill for dashcams.

I saw that too, rain forecast for the next 4 days.
I just got back from gathering my first daytime footage of the A139 Pro.
I'm uploading it now.

I now have a thermal camera (TOPDON TC001) that I'll start using with my dash camera reviews
That thermal camera is going to be a game changer in dash cam reviews.
I wish they made an iOS version for me. lol

The next 9 days, not much of præcipitation here, but temperatures will be below freezing, though only down to -10 deg C
That however are still 30 deg C below my minimum temperature.

Only down to minus 9 here, and no rain, just snow, sunshine and little white clouds - nice :)

Somehow I read that as "Warning, yellow ice". I had to read that again to get it right.
On the video forecast, they always read it as a "Yellow ice warning", and "Yellow snow warning"!

NEVER eat the yellow snow :D

Back to dash camera related info....

I was able to get a few test driving loops completed this morning (very high/thin clouds). Here are the thermal images from the two A139 Pro 3CH production dash cameras I have setup in my car.

Total Operating Time: 20 Minutes / Outside Temp 50F (10C) / Inside Car Temp 68F (20C) / 3CH 4K 2160P 24fps - Left = HDR Enabled / Right = HDR Disabled

These were the temps as captured by my TOPDON TC001 thermal camera after driving the first loop of my normal test route. The temps seemed a bit low. Loops two and three show higher temps.

tc001_20221208_095814.jpg tc001_20221208_095915.jpg

Total Operating Time: 40 Minutes / Outside Temp 50F (10C) / Inside Car Temp 68F (20C) / 3CH 4K 1600P 30fps - Left = HDR Enabled / Right = HDR Disabled

The temps noted in the thermal images definitely increased compared to the first loop. The temp at the middle of the front camera had warmed to 137.5F (58.6C) for the left camera (HDR enabled) and 134.4F (56.8C) for the camera with HDR disabled.

tc001_20221208_101541.jpg tc001_20221208_101707.jpg

Total Operating Time: 58 Minutes / Outside Temp 50F (10C) / Inside Car Temp 68F (20C) / 3CH 4K 2160P 24fps - Left = HDR Enabled / Right = HDR Disabled

I wanted to see if the first loop's camera temps were low simply because they had not come up to full operating temperature or if the 4K 2160P 24fps video resolution was somehow operating cooler than 4K 1600P 30fps resolution. It turns out the 4K 2160P 24fps temps after the third loop were slightly warmer than loop 2's temps with 4K 1600P 30fps video resolution setting. It looks like loop 1's temps were lower simply because the A139 Pro front dash camera had not fully warmed up after 20 minutes of operation.

Loop One - Right Camera - 3CH 4K 2160P 24fps - FW v1.0_1115 - HDR Disabled - Interior Camera Video Did Not Record

Yesterday, I installed the two new A139 Pro 3CH dash cameras in my car. Both dash cameras were successfully recording video for all three video channels (Front, Interior and Rear). Today, I powered up the dash cameras and both A139 Pro 3CH dash cameras announced "Recording. Three channels started".

When I arrived home and copied the video files from the microSD card installed in the A139 Pro 3CH with HDR disabled (right camera in my installation), I found that during the first test loop the camera only recorded front and rear camera video files. There were no video files from the interior camera until I turned on Wi-Fi to allow me to change the resolution setting for loop 2. The camera recorded front, rear and interior video files the entire remainder of my test loop driving.

File listing showing front, rear and interior video files were created at the end of the installation on 7-Dec-2022. The start of loop 1 on 8-Dec-2022 has no interior video files.

At the end of loop 1, I parked the car to adjust the settings in both A139 Pro 3CH dash cameras. I changed the settings in the left (HDR enabled) dash camera first and the moved on to the right camera.
  • I turned on Wi-Fi
  • Connected my Android tablet over 5 GHz Wi-Fi to the dash camera,
  • I stopped video recording
  • Entered the settings page
  • Changed the video resolution from 4K 2160P 24fps + 1080p 24fps + 1080p 24fps to 4K 1600P 30fps + 1080p 30fps + 1080p 30fps
  • Exited the settings screen
  • Restarted video recording
  • Exited the VIOFO app
  • Disconnected my Android tablet from the dash camera Wi-Fi
  • Turned off Wi-Fi
  • Powered down the dash camera
  • Powered it up again with the new resolution setting in place.
I performed the power down/up steps just to be sure that using Wi-Fi and changing the video resolution setting did not create/introduce any other issue during my tests.

I found that when I pressed the Wi-Fi button to turn on Wi-Fi on the camera not recording the interior video, the interior video started recording at that point in time and for the remainder of my test loops. I confirmed my actions by viewing the interior video from my VIOFO T130 3CH interior camera.

1670538293380.png

The file listing shows that the interior video was being recorded at the end of loop 2 and at the start of loop 3. Loop 3 had the video resolution restored to 4K 2160P 24fps + 1080p 24fps + 1080p 24fps.

There appears to be some issue/bug causing the interior camera video from being recorded after the A139 Pro was initially powered up. I examined all cables and found them to be fully plugged into their connection sockets. I'll have to see if this issue repeats.

Is it normal for the Viofo A139 Pro to auto-start wifi each time? The unit I have seems to auto-start wifi. Haven't had this experience with other Viofo dash cams.

The Wi-Fi being automatically enabled after a power up is because the Wi-Fi was enabled before the dash camera was last powered off. If you turn off the Wi-Fi and then power down the dash camera, the next time you power up the dash camera the Wi-Fi feature will remain off.

I did notice that both of the A139 Pro 3CH production dash cameras that I just received had Wi-Fi auto enabled after power up. During manufacturing, there must have been a step that had the Wi-Fi enabled before it was powered down to be boxed up.

Thanks! Didn't know that it is saving the last setting and I never bother turning off wifi since it was enabled out of the box.

It will turn off automatically if no connections in 10 mins. But not like before, the camera will keep recording while WiFi enabled or disabled.

VIOFO has been kind enough to issue a promo code to my company so that viewers of my videos and website can save an additional $20 USD on the purchase of an A139 Pro 1CH/2CH/3CH dash camera.

I have the promo code info on my company website in a blog post. VIOFO A139 Pro Promo Code Info

I was able to drive my car on a cloudy day without any rain. Since the frame grabs are too large for this website, here are a couple of screenshots of the HDR Enabled vs HDR Disabled

One thing I noticed when I unboxed the two A139 Pro dash cameras, was that one of them had the microphone disabled. I guess I pressed the microphone button a bit too long with recording turned off because the video files recorded by the "HDR Disabled" camera are H.265 files and the "HDR Enabled" files are H.264 files.

Left Camera (HDR Enabled)
Video: H.264/AVC 3840x2160 24fps [English, Video 1 (H.264/AVC, High Profile, Level 5.1, 3840x2160, 24.000 fps)]
Audio: AAC 16000Hz 1.0 chn [English, Audio 1 (AAC, 16.0 kHz, 1.0 chn, 16 bit)]

Right Camera (HDR Disabled)
Video: HEVC 3840x2160 24fps [English, Video 1 (HEVC, Main Profile, Level 5.0, 3840x2160, 24.000 fps)]
Audio: AAC 16000Hz 1.0 chn [English, Audio 1 (AAC, 16.0 kHz, 1.0 chn, 16 bit)]

I'll have to get them both using the same video codec going forward. No way to see what the current codec setting is (that I'm aware of) for the A139 Pro other than checking the video files that are recorded by the dash camera.

Based on my testing of the A139 Pro, and now your screenshots HDR on/off. I’m not 100% convinced HDR should be utilized for daytime driving for license plate capture. In the screenshots HDR makes the clouds look pretty but the license plate is blurry to my eyes. With HDR off the clouds are blown out, but the plate looks less blurry to my eyes, and I can read it; CA# 75864Z2 2019 Ram 1500

I can't quite make out the Honda Accord in lane #2

Here are a few more examples from of HDR Enabled vs HDR Disabled from my weekly shopping trip route on 09-Dec-2022. It was a cloudy day, but I was lucky enough to get through the entire trip without any rain. I've created the largest screenshots that this website will allow to be uploaded to this post.

Dash Camera Settings:
  • Firmware: v1.0_1115
  • Channel Configuration: 3-Channel
  • CPL: Installed
  • Resolution Setting: "4K 2160P 24fps + 1080p 24fps + 1080p 24fps"
  • Bitrate: Maximum
  • Parking Mode - Low Bitrate
HDR Enabled (left) vs HDR Disabled (right)

This was the best frame from the video almost showing the license plate on the grey Honda passing in front of my car. The HDR video has entire Honda somewhat blurred as well.
1670793445652.png 1670793540413.png

The rear plate on the white pickup on the right (to me) appears to be more legible in the HDR disabled video.

One example from low bitrate 2560x1440 parking mode:

OK, in the last post I said I was not 100% convinced HDR should be used during daytime driving to capture license plates.
After seeing these screenshots, I am now convinced HDR should NOT be used during daytime, and ONLY used during night time / low light.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, (Nigel). lol

Oh yeah, when I try to upload screenshots to this forum it seems the maximum allowable file size between 2.2MB and 2.4MB.
