That's my whole point.
You played by the rules, and it was a contributing factor to this guy's negligence harming you.

I wish you would file a police report with this evidence to generate the paperwork, and then file a claim with HIS insurance company.
Maybe police can give you his insurance company based on his license plate.
It would be nice if he could face accountability for his actions.

Of course parts are not available for your exotic relic, but maybe you can find a re-manufactured unit from a specialty outfitter at an exorbitant price to make his insurance company raise his rates, or drop him from coverage.
You might even get an episode of Judge Wapner out of this.

I agree that if I had a large amount of free time to pursue the issue, it might be worth it just for the satisfaction. I just don't have that amount of free time and in the end it will still be an ugly ex-police car that looks awful. The person that decommissioned this vehicle from the sheriff's department should be criminally charged due to their use of metal tools to remove the sheriff's department decals from the painted body panels.

We're buying a 2026 Toyota RAV4 [to be delivered late August or early September]. If this type of damage was caused to that vehicle, you bet I would be pursuing it.

Chuck, I hear you and agree that the other driver's type of behavior is unacceptable. If I get the Folsom police involved to get his insurance [if they are even willing to pursue it], then I'll have to report this to my auto insurance as well. As to finding a replacement door handle, that door handle was a replacement door handle back in 2020 when I first started working on that car. I found one of the only other Chevy Caprice vehicles in the greater Sacramento area at a wrecking yard that had door handles that were not all broken/fully discolored. It's just not worth my time.

What a pain! It's not really about the starting condition of your car, but the lack of interest people have in doing the right thing and taking responsibility for their actions. Some days, you come across events that restore your faith in humanity. This is an unfortunate example of the opposite.
 
Here are two nighttime plate capture attempts with four 4K UHD cameras. Copied from original post in my Thinkware ARC 900 thread.

  • Thinkware U3000 Pro 2CH HDR CPL [attached with adhesive]

The first plate capture is with both vehicles stationary.

The second plate capture attempt is with the same two vehicles on a freeway on ramp. The speed difference is about 5 MPH.
