In cities the amount of light available from street lights, headlights of other cars, and even light coming from houses or signs can dramatically affect dash cam performance.
That is why a dashcam that appears to have great night recordings in video footage taken in a well lit city does not record images as well in darker locations when your headlights are the only light source.

Here is a sped up video from a crappy 480p rear camera (attached to a front 1080p mirror cam (that goes down to 720p when the rear cam is active) that shows the effect of city lights on a dashcams ability to gather details.

Do not be misled by an ad with picture of cars parked under a large amount of city lights on a street that says you can capture license plates. While it could happen under those circumstances when you are moving at 60mph or are away from city lights solely depending on your own headlights for illumination you are unlikely to see the level of night detail promised.
