The Kingslim D5 4K is a Chinese single channel dash camera released in Dec 2021. The Kingslim trademark is owned by the Chinese company HKSO Technology. The Kingslim D5 is the newest dash cam from this company.
Unfortunately Kingslim does not provide the processor and CMOS sensor specs of the D5 4K. Kingslim has a history of exaggerating the specs of their dash cams. On their other “4K” dash cam, the Kingslim D4, the 5MP Sony IMX355 sensor does not support 4K natively. Given the price and video quality of the D5, we suspect the 4K resolution is interpolated as well.
Video Quality
The D5 4K records 2160p (4K) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 13 Mbps. While the video quality during the day is good, it doesn’t seem to be 4K quality. In fact, the 2K P30 setting produces similar video. Video quality at night is average due to it grainy.
Features
The Kingslim D5 4K has a 2″ screen, g-sensor and has built in GPS. The camera comes with WiFi and has apps for Android and iOS. Note the app quality is below average, worse than many other dash cam apps with many users reporting connectivity issues.
Kingslim also provides PC and macOS applications to view videos. The D5 4K provides non-buffered parking mode if you hardwire the dash cam to your vehicle (optional hardwire kit required). A timelapse feature is also available.
The Kingslim D5 4K comes with an adhesive mount and cannot swivel to record interactions at the driver or passenger windows. While smaller than other Kingslim cameras, the D5 4K is a medium sized at 89 x 58 x 15mm. The red border around the lens and writing on the front of the camera make it less discreet than it could otherwise be. On the positive side the dash cam is solidly built. The camera comes with screen error notifications.
Support
Kingslim appears to be responsive to questions but beyond that, the camera has limited support. Kingslim has a website which includes firmware updates. However, we have not seen any firmware updates for the D5 since it launched. Kingslim provides a 12 month warranty, which is standard for most dash cams.
Known Problems
While there are no widespread initial problems with this dash cam, there have been some reports that the D5 stops working after a few months.
Sample Videos
There are numerous reviews and videos on Youtube for this camera and video quality is acceptable but not great. Does not appear to be on par with 4K cameras.
Should I Purchase
The Kingslim D5 4K does not deliver on video quality promised and we suspect this is not a true 4K camera. Specifically the grainy video quality at night is disappointing. Use of a battery instead of a super capacitor and no audio error notifications are additional negatives.
On the positive side build quality is good, price is reasonable and reliability has been average.
