VIOFO A329

VIOFO A329

The A329 is the latest flagship dash cam for the Chinese manufacturer VIOFO. This camera is essentially an upgraded version of the popular A229 Pro and has similar specifications but with a number of key enhancements. These enhancements include:

  1. An upgraded Novatek processor which allows for 4K front video recording at 60 frames per second instead of 30 frames per second
  2. External Solid State Drive (SSD) support up to 4TB
  3. WiFi 6 connectivity which allows for much faster data transfer when downloading a video via the app

These 3 enhancements give it an edge over the A229 Pro. However the A329 has 1 drawback as it only supports 2-channels (front and rear) while the A229 Pro supports up to 3-channels (front, rear and internal).

The VIOFO A329 is based on a Novatek processor but the specific processor model has not been disclosed. It uses a 4K Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 CMOS sensor for the front camera and a 2K Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 CMOS sensor for the rear camera.

Video Quality

The VIOFO A329 has excellent video quality. The front camera records 2160p (4K) video at 60fps with an average bitrate of 65 Mbps. This high bit rate delivers excellent video quality during the day for the front camera and good performance at night.

In theory, the 60fps recording should improve the ability to capture details, such as license plates, in fast moving scenes. In practice, some scenarios offer improved detail capture, but in most cases the video quality is similar to the 30fps recording of the A229 Pro.

The rear camera records 1440p (Quad HD) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 27 Mbps. While not in par with the front camera, the rear camera does a very good job during the day and an average job at night. That being said it is one of the better rear cams we have seen on a multi-channel dash cam.

Features

The VIOFO A329 has a 2.4″ screen, g-sensor and a GPS mount. The camera comes with WiFi 6, 5GHz & 2.4GHz. This is the first dash cam we have seem that utilizes WiFi 6, and it significantly speeds up the downloading of clips from the dash cam to your smartphone with either the Android or iOS app.

The A329 uses the familiar wedge shaped design as many of the other VIOFO cameras and comes with an adhesive mount. The camera cannot swivel to record interactions at the driver or passenger windows. Build quality is very good, and the camera comes with audio and screen error notifications.

This is a medium sized dash cam at 99 x 61 x 43mm. Not the smallest camera but not overly large either. The rear camera is 71 x 38 x 28mm.

VIOFO A329 Size

Like other VIOFO cameras, the A329 supports 3 parking modes:

  1. Auto event detection or buffered parking mode
  2. Time-lapse parking mode
  3. Low bitrate parking mode

To enable these parking modes, you will need to hardwire the dash cam to your car (the Viofo 3-wire hardwire kit has a low voltage cutoff and is recommended)

VIOFO has been including Voice Control on its most recent cameras. The A329 supports the following voice commands in 4 languages (English, Chinese, Russian, Japanese):

  1. Lock the Video
  2. Video Start
  3. Video Stop
  4. Take Photo
  5. Turn On Audio
  6. Turn Off Audio
  7. Turn On Screen
  8. Turn Off Screen
  9. Turn on WiFI
  10. Turn off WiFi
  11. Show Front Camera
  12. Show Rear Camera
  13. Show Both Cameras

Out of this list of voice commands, the Lock Video one is the most useful, the rest are unlikely to be used on a regular basis.

The VIOFO A329 is the first mainstream dash cam we have seen with support for external Solid State Drives (SSD) up to 4TB. The dash cam comes with a USB-C cable that can connect to an external SSD drive which can be hidden in the vehicle such as in the glove box. The A329 can record to MicroSD cards as well like most other dash cams. However, the camera will not record to both at the same time. You will need to choose whether to record on the SSD or MicroSD card.

Support

VIOFO is responsive to questions and have good support. They also provide regular firmware updates and take into consideration user feedback. VIOFO also provides a 18 month warranty (12 months plus an additional 6 months if you register online) which is better than most dash cams.

Should I Purchase

The VIOFO A329 has very impressive video quality for both front and rear cameras with STARVIS 2 sensors for cameras. The A329 also delivers some unique features such as 4K 60fps front camera recording, external SSD support and WiFi 6.

Build quality of the camera is very good, an 18 month warranty with registration is provided and VIOFO provides firmware updates to improve the camera over time.

The primary negative is the high cost at $400 which is quite expensive for a dual camera. Overall this is a great camera to consider given the combination of video quality and features if the high price tag doesn’t bother you.
