FoxOffer Dome G90 Dashcam Review - A7LA30, OV4689 CMOS

The LS460W has issues with motion close up from what I've seen - they seem to be keeping the exposure levels high to keep the picture brighter in harsher conditions at the expense of sharpness.

Unfortunately I can't directly compare as only have one G90 so you can do those tests yourself if you just do the same run twice in quick succession so the lighting etc is similar :)

The G90 gets hot but you'd need to do longer term testing to see how stability is - I ran it for an hour with no issues and to be honest it wasn't that hot to be honest and it's about 26 celsius here outside.

In terms of sizes you're looking at the following:

As you can see it's hitting almost 250MB per minute so you'd get around 32 mins on an 8GB card at that rate so working that out:

8GB - 30mins
16GB - 1 hour
32GB - 2 hours
64GB - 4 hours

Audio is better with the latest firmware that Doreen supplied but still has clipping - if the mic was bad in the first batch then there's only so much they can do to polish a turd :)

I think it's fair to say the G90 is punching above it's weight!

My G90 3 minute clips are only 340mb each.
Looks like 1 min 25mbps clips are over 200mb easily so 3 min could be almost 700mb.
That's huge increase in file size but as long as it also improves video quality and details, it could be worth it.
BTW, do you know how to save original firmware if I have to go back?

I'm not familiar with firmware modification at all so need some reading there.

It's in the link above mate - basically download those files - rename to firmware.bin and drop into top level folder of the memory card - turn the camera on and it will ask to update so just press the arrow key to select the tick and click OK.

To revert to stock just copy the standard firmware.bin onto the camera and flash and to go to 24Mbps or 20Mbps just copy the files the same and rename firmware.bin.

The sweet spot is usually 15Mbps anyway for numberplate reading which is standard - I just fancied seeing how it would cope :)

If you want to try it here are the firmwares:

Standard r328MP from Dome:

r328MP modified to run at 20Mbps VBR, min 1 max 2:

Might have to give these a go. Thanks.
Edit.
I meant to ask. I don't know how custom you can get or maybe this is done already, but would it be possible to turn HDR On/Off into a separate menu entry instead of it being like it is now where you have to go to video and change it?

That's one for Doreen and co at Dome tbh mate - they do seem good at feedback like that though as the Mic menu was added afterwards :)

Hello friend, I quite understand your concerns, bcz I've asked the same question before. ;)
However, we are unable to make it at the moment, even Ambarella company cannot. The best we can do is 1920*1080p/30fps supports HDR.
We will keep improving this, together with Ambarella, once available, will share with everybody.

Thanks for letting me know. It's not to bad, but i'm used to having it in a different menu and almost never go into my video settings menu on my other cameras because it is always on 1080.

DOME will make impossible to possible. ;)
Now when you select HDR 1920*1080, there is an icon "HDR" on the screen, you noticed this?
I am now also discussing with our engineer to improve the software, when review the videos on PC or TV,
there is also an icon "HDR" on the screen, this help people easily to distinguish.

Hmmm... what is the MIC menu?
Is that something to help audio recording?

I noticed my G90 doesn't stay on without power.
As soon as I power it up, it displays 'Goodbye' and shuts down even when the battery level is over half.
Does yours do the same?

Also, the version looks weird on mine.
The version it has is trunk: SVN r

Could it be test version since I got demo model?
thanks

Seems that the revision number is missing :D

So how do I tell if it has old or new firmware?

I see you have link to A7 firmware customization tool. Does that help with audio recording issue?

Reverend,
Have you had chance to see what size polarizing filter works with this?
I read G1WH can use 34mm - 37mm adapter without any modification.
Anything similar for G90 would be great for my sunlight drive.

The battery thing is normal mate as it's not a massive capacity battery in there - mine doesn't last long either but it's only there to ensure that the last file is saved correctly - batteries in these things are a hindrance tbh.

CPL wise I've got a 27mm here I reckon would fit with 3M tape easily - I'll have a play later.

That firmware was the same one that @CheckYourLights had I bet - it's quite an old one compared to the latest ones posted :)

Okay, I'll try Doreen's firmware.
thanks.

My C600 powers on with battery for over 15 minutes.
The G90 doesn't even turn on. It turns on but displays 'Goodbye' and shuts off.
Could you test yours and see if it stays on? It should at least stay on for few minutes on battery power.
thanks

Mine still has it. I'm waiting to do a few things before I update, but as reverend mentioned mine came just like that. No numbers or anything.

Mine stays on just long enough to get into the menu and check the version, if not plugged and if i am not quick I can miss it before it turns off.

Well I nipped out to get a comparison of the LS460W and the G90 at night but the LS460W didn't record anything so that was a waste of an hours fuel!

Here's another pitch black G90 video:

The G90 seems to handle itself well in the dark!

I've also tried the 27mm CPL I have and it fits and will stick on the front, but it needs to be bigger as does cause some vignetting.

You'd probably best best with around a 30mm one - maybe even slightly bigger. If you have access to digital calipers you could see exactly what size would fit on the metal ring as that should be a pretty good fit!

Looks really good. What firmware was the video shot with?

Thanks.
I need something that doesn't involve much DIY.
I'll see if I can find something local to try what size fits.
No have digital calipers.
